T41 motherboard swap to T42

#1 Post by Maskitoe » Tue Dec 23, 2008 8:25 pm

Hi,
I've searched through the posts but couldn't find an answer to my specific question, so please excuse if this has already been answered before.....

I have a T41 which suffers from the common GPU problem, I've tried the reflow method twice but without success as I didnt have a proper thermometer. I suspect I wasn't ever getting the BGA solder beads hot enough for them to reflow. I am now considering buying a used T42 instead of a T41 motherboard. My question is....can I swap all the removable parts from the T41 ( modem, WiFi, memory, CPU ) and transfer to the T42 motherboard?....also can I tell what the FRU part number is without removing the motherboard from the unit just in case there are compatibility issues?

Welcome to the forum!

There are no compatibility issues between T41 and T42 machines, and you can swap all the parts between them, boards included.

All the appropriate FRU numbers can be found in the HMM:

Good luck.
