Thinkpad keyboard broken?

#1 Post by pcdj » Thu Dec 25, 2008 11:15 am

I've had this issue for a while now where, only rarely and quite randomly, I close the lid on my T43 and when I reopen it after some time the screen does not start up again even after attempts at pressing the appropriate Fn+F'whatever' key to swap between internal and external displays.

It did this earlier today, I held down the power key and power cycled the laptop as there doesn't seem to be any other way to remedy this.

An hour or so later it happened again. This time the power key did nothing at all. There was also no response from the caps lock and num lock keys as the corresponding lights on the lid were not turning on and off.

I've left it for a while. Unplugged the keyboard and plugged it back in - but still no response.

Aside from purchasing another keyboard and swapping them out, does anyone have any other suggestions as to how to troubleshoot this? I'm hoping it's not an issue with the system board itself but have no way of checking and no way of powering the thing on now.

Thanks in advance, and merry christmas!

I've also just noticed that the battery light on the lide of the laptop no longer lights when the power cable is plugged in now that the laptop is off.

If someone could correct me if I'm wrong - if memory serves me correctly this should be orange or green when the cable is plugged in but the laptop is off? So I guess the problem is far deeper than just the keyboard.

the led should lights green or orange only if the battery is also plugged, at least this shows on my T43

Its probably failure of the Mobo

Yes, both the large 6-cell battery on the back of the laptop and the slim ultrabay battery are plugged in, as well as the power cable, and the light doesn't come on at all.

Guess I'm looking at a rather expensive motherboard replacement then!
