slow, slow, slow wireless

My wireless connection has suddenly become very very slow. As I type this, I am watching a 40MB file download from another computer on my network (802.11G). It's been cooking for 3 or 4 minutes now and reports just 22 minutes left to go!

Some related factoids:
- I am about 5 feet from the wireless router (SMC 802.11G) and getting an excellent signal
- Sending and receiving is slow both on my LAN and the internet;
- I have two other computers on my LAN, and both send and receive at their normal rates (at least 10x faster than my TP);
- I have uninstalled Access Connections and the ProSet configuration tool to no effect;
- similarly, no change when windows manages the wireless connection or not

I am now downloading (slowly) the latest drivers from intel. I'll post back the results... just 18 more minutes

BTW, I'm not the only person to have seen this problem. I noticed at least a couple of other posts that seem to be very closely related (but solutionless, alas):
