Knoppix works on almost all ThinkPads

#1 Post by jenny-m » Mon Jan 17, 2005 6:35 pm

Knoppix is perhaps not as well known as SuSE or RedHat but still a great Linux-Distribution. For all those who want to try it out, you can just boot yourThinkPad with a Knoppix-CD and play around, it will not change anything on your harddisk.

The source is free of cost and can be found at: http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html

there are a great many "live distos" of *nix based systems as Knoppix.

From memory there's

Mandrake Move
Lindows Mobile
Knoppix
Suse Mobile
Debian

A great site for these and more is linuxiso.org

Only problem is it doesn't come with the drivers for the Intel 2200BG. Sucks. I've been playing with Knoppix STD 0.1 for a bit now and since I'm still very much a linux n00b, I have no idea how to get the drivers on the bootable cd. Nevertheless, I've been using my trusty old Orinoco Gold Card. Anyone want to tell me in a very simple way to patch the BG drivers to the bootable cd? I made it from the STD ISO file. Thanks in advance.

Has anyone tried running a live distro off a USB key yet? With 1GB USB keys becoming common it should work...
