T40 Processor, ram & graphics compatibility

#1 Post by le_porquer » Tue Jan 06, 2009 5:25 am

Hi,

I previously posted a topic about upgrading my integrated graphics chip on my T30:

http://www.imwebd.com/~thinkpad/phpBB3/ ... 28&t=71564

But apparently the motherboard will not support.

I have available to me a free T40 in the near future, but I have a few questions:

First of all, can the T40 support a Pentium 4-M 2.4Ghz SL6VC and 2GB PC2100 RAM?

I recently installed these parts into a T30 and it runs like a dream, but as the T40 has a better graphics card I will siphon all of the new parts I bought into the T40, and would like to know an compatibility issues that may occur.

Secondly, what varients of ATI Radeon M graphics cards are there for the T40?

Looking forward to your responses, thanks.
Modified T30: Pent 4-M 2.4Ghz | 2GB DDR2 RAM | GEN2 Fan | 40GB SATA | XP-SP3

Modified T41: Pent M 1.7Ghz Banias | 768 DDR2 RAM | ATI Fire GL-T2 128MB | 60GB SATA | Win7

The T40 supports Pentium M CPU's, not Pentium 4M, so the answer is no. PC2100 will work.

Video chipsets found in T40's -

ATI® Mobility RADEON® 7500 / AGP 4X / 32MB DDR-SDRAM
ATI Mobility RADEON 9000 / AGP 4X / 32MB DDR-SDRAM

Video chipset found in T40P -

ATI® Mobility FireGL® 9000 / AGP 4X / 64MB DDR-SDRAM

Hi,

The processor in question is listed by Intel as a Pentium-M 2.4GHZ, but classed as a 'catagory 4 processor', hence why I put the above as Pentium 4 M.

Judging by Intels information the Pentium-M SL6VC 2.4 GHZ should be T40 compatible, is this information wrong then?

Thanks muchly.

No, SL6VC is not a Pentium M CPU. T4X's only support the CPU's on the Banias or Dothan standard voltage lists at the following link;

Ok thanks, dont know much about Pentium M series but judging by the information at hand on the clock speeds and general bus ratio a Penitum M 1.6 Ghz should theoretically attain the same sort of speeds that a Pentium 4-M 2.4 Ghz can obtain.

Ill wait to see which type of T40 I receive, as if its the ATI Radeon Mobility 7500 version it wont nessesarily be an upgrade from my T30.

Thanks for your help.

Any T40 will be an upgrade in features and performance.
Weight is 10% less with the T40
Power consumption & heat are reduced.
USB 2.0 speed
Double the L2 processor cache 512kb vs 1024kb for the Banias
Centrino support
Greatly improved battery runtime plus 9cell option
X200s 7470-A12 1.86Ghz 8GB WXGA+ 1440x900 HyperX SSD 120GB Windows7 Pro 64bit

Very true but I only require the T40 if it has a max gfx ram of 128mb.

Ive got conflicting information (yet again), in one ear im being told the ATI Radeon M9 in the T40 has a maximum of 128MB ram and in one ear im being told it only supports 64MB - Anyone clarify please?

T40's only came with the GPU's/RAM I listed above. If we're talking about T41, T42, or T43's, then that is a much different story.

If it's a T40 then you have the ATI7500/9000 with 32Mb RAM. If it's a T40p then you have the Fire chipset with 128Mb RAM. Some people claim to have seen a 64Mb T40p in some markets but I've yet to see one in the flesh.

The T30 was not the greatest laptop IBM ever made - the T4x series was MUCH better and the original T40 didn't appear to have the T41/T42 video chipset issue!

I'm sorry, but the information provided in the quoted part of the above post is incorrect. ALL T40p units have 64MB VRAM, FireGl T2 with 128MB VRAM became available with T41p, and was used on T42p and R50p as well.

As Harry & George wrote, 64MB with a Fire GL chipset for T40p's is the correct, original motherboard - I've owned a few.
