multiburner won't play dvds

#1 Post by jotong » Mon Jan 17, 2005 11:26 pm

I have a 2373-3VU with a MATSHITA UJ-812 multiburner. My problem is that the computer will play audio CDs and VCDs, but it won't recognize DVDs at all. When I try playing a DVD with WinDVD, it says that "No valid disc/drive found". Does any one have any suggestions? Is it a faulty drive?

Bad drive.

Same thing happened on one of my T42s. I swapped out a multiburner from another t42 and the other one worked fine. IBM said "thanks for doing the troubleshooting for us" and fed-ex'd me a new drive next day - worked like a charm.

Are you talking about a store bought or rented DVD or one you burned yourself? If you burned it yourself, the UJ-812 is limited to -R format of self made discs.

Hmm, that's odd. Just recently I played a back-up copy of a move in my multiburner, and it was a +r disc. I didn't even think of it at the time...I wonder why it worked...?

Possibly because it was finalized. It won't burn +R discs (of course) but it is possible that it could play a finalized one. Not guaranteed, more "hit and miss".

The multiburner will read +R and +RW discs, but won't burn them.

I've had the exact problem the OP mentioned, it was with commercial, pressed US DVD discs as well as with any recordable DVD-R/-RW media. I'm pretty sure in his case it's also a bad drive.

It was a store bought DVD, the extended edition of RotK, to be exact.

I called IBM today, and they're fex-exing me a replacement drive, so hopefully that will fix the problem

Haha that's even better - no questions asked. IBM tech support, especially in component replacement, deserves a big thumbs up.
