Question about the IBM SERVICE PARTITION..

#1 Post by vadarfone » Thu Jan 08, 2009 2:01 am

Hey guys.

Not been here for a while.

OK, I am planning to buy a Hitachi 7200RPM 320GB drive for my T42.

Currently I have a Japanese T42, with a 60gb Hitachi 7200RPM HD, with Japanese XP on it.

Now...

I want to install English XP on the new 320gb drive to use in my Japanese T42.

That part is no problem, but I was wondering... the IBM SERVICE partition... Can I just clone that using Acronis True Image, onto the new drive and it will work as it did in the old drive?

Any help would be great! These big drive are so unbelievably cheap now!!

Wanting to swap the screens on these! Any ideas??

Hi,

I don't think you can switch to a new Hitachi 320 GB hard drive, because this drive has a sata interface. But your T42 supports only pata. Currently, the pata drive with the highst capacity is the Western Digital WD2500BEVE with 250 GB. And yes, it is possible to clone your old drive. :)

OK thanks for the reply.

So the SATA/PATA thing is news to me. I will check it out.

As for cloning my drive, yes I know I can do that. My question was a bit more complex though.

In the time since my first post today, I cloned my entire drive (with the Japanese OS on it)

Then I tried to install English XP on it, wiping the Japanese XP, but keeping the hidden IBM partition.

The installation went fine, but when I loaded English windows for the first time, none of the stuff that is on the IBM partition works (ie, the volume and mute buttons on the machine, the LAN ports etc.)

Any ideas?

Try installing the latest Thinkvantage Rescue & Recovery, and then repair the MBR using this disc...

Thanks for all the help guys. This forum is fantastic.

Now, I do actually have a set of Recovery disks, but I they will recover everythingin Japanese! This sort of defeats the object of the whole exercise.

I thought I could keep the IBM partition, and just wipe the Japanese XP partition and install a fresh English XP in the same place.

This caused all the IBM stuff to stop working...

Any more ideas? If I can't get a bigger drive, I would at least like to install the English version of XP on my smaller drive...

You need a set of English XP Pro recovery discs.

That looks to be the case!

So, how would I go about getting these? I have a legitimately bought T42, and a legit copy of English XP. I seriously hope I dont have to pay for them!

Post an ad in the Marketplace forum and ask a forum member to help, you might get lucky. Otherwise, yes you are paying for them, unless you can talk Lenovo into the fact that somehow you were sent the wrong discs initially ...

Maybe I'm missing the point of the OP but wouldn't it be sufficient if he/she downloaded and installed all the applicable drivers from Lenovo's website. Then "the volume and mute buttons on the machine, the LAN ports etc.", all should be working again.

Definitely ! You only need to download all the support software to your English Windows. All this stuff is already contained in Rescue & Recovery so it was installed with your JPN Windows but not with pure Windows XP ENG install disk. At least you need to download and install the system update tool and then you can install the rest via this tool.

Hey guys.

Great ideas thanks!

The downloading idea is a really good one. The main problem I have though, is that the LAN cable doesnt work with my standard Eng XP install, so I can't download the drivers!

I guess I could download them and put them on an external drive, and install them from there... Would that work?

Success!

I am posting this message from my T42, with an English XP install.

Not everything is working correctly at the moment, but I will work through this over the weekend and it should all be ready for work on Tuesday!

Great stuff. Thanks so much for all your help!

For the record, I downloaded the LAN driver from Lenovo, installed it and then got online. Did the rest from there!

It works!

Thanks again.

Glad it worked out well for you. Enjoy the bigger/faster HD.
(for future reference: download all the drivers before doing any upgrades )
