t22/win2k: desktop extension
t22/win2k: desktop extension
hi, I am trying to extend a t22-win2K desktop using a second monitor. On my T42 under windows XP there was a display/settings area where you could click "extend desktop". in win2K this seems missing, so the images on the laptop screen and the second monitor are the same. yet the win2k documentation definitely refers to some kind of desktop extension facilities, but i cannot find them. anybody knows whats going on? many thanks!
did that, as well as installed all windows updates, but didnt help.
since i have only previously used the desktop extension under winXP, whereas here I use win2000, can somebody please tell me if I am looking in the right place for the settings: Display -settings (same panel as resolution/colour). I tried 'advanced' but couldnt find anything there either
any help would be greatly appreciated!

the win2000 help says:
---------
* To manipulate placement of the monitors
* Open Display in Control Panel, and then click the Settings tab.
Right-click the graphic representation of one of your monitors, and then click Identify.
* Verify placement of the monitors, then drag the monitor graphic around until it is displayed correctly on the screen.
--------
problem is I dont seem to have an "identify" button. I use win2000pro on T22, and this is rather confusing...

IIRC, neither W2K nor the display driver provided by IBM for the T22's S3 Savage IX8+ video controller natively support the extended desktop option.
Your choices are to either get a second video card such as the Margi Display-to-Go PC card or use XP as your OS.

James

thanks for the info. So there is absolutely no way to 'upgrade' win2000 to handle this? Particulalry since the hardware itself supports this under winXP?
In the meantime, I've switched off the T22 screen when using external monitor. If I disconnect the T22 and restart it with the external monitor disconnected, will it turn on the laptop screen automaticaly? I am a bit scared to experiment in case I end up with a switched off screen
