HPA Questions

#1 Post by sojourner » Thu Jan 08, 2009 7:45 pm

A friend and I have a similar situation with our TP's. She has a T41 and I have an R51. Both have HPA (Hidden Partition Area) on the HDD but neither of us can access the partition to do a system restore!

The partitions are there because a NON-DOS partition (appropriately sized) can be seen in fdisk (both drives). Pushing 'Access IBM' only brings up a menu with choices for accessing BIOS, booting as normal etc (no restore option). The BIOS setting for HPA is correct, have also tried rewriting MBR with IBM's floppy software. Still no joy!

The partitions are there but cannot be accessed on both laptops. Anybody have ideas how to proceed?

Probably the hidden partition is corrupt and therefore is not recognized by the BIOS as the recovery partition. Even if you can boot to it, I would advise doing a complete restore from it because of what else my of been compromised.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

I've tried that but there's only three options (BIOS, Choose Boot drive, something else) but no 'recovery' selection.

... any other ideas?
