I have a T42p, running XP Pro SP3, and for some reason, Windows won't react to my power button in terms of shutting it down, going into standby, or hibernating (per the power management settings). Nothing happens when I hit the power button, unless I hold it in for a few seconds to physically cut the power.
As far as I know, I have all of the correct power-management components installed. I just reinstalled the PM driver from http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... GXPEG.html. That didn't do the trick.
Fn + F4 works fine for standby, Fn + 12 works fine for hibernate, and the computer will go to sleep when I close the lid, just like it's supposed to. But for some reason, nothing at all happens when I hit the power button!
I've tried uninstalling the ACPI components listed in Device Manager, then rebooting, and letting Windows reinstall them. No success with that.
Any ideas? It's not a huge deal, but I want to get to the bottom of this little quirk!
Thanks!

Re: T42p ignoring power button in XP. Fn + F4, etc., work fine.
Did you ever solve this problem?
I have the same problem on my T40. I did a clean install of XP Pro SP2 and then installed SP3 (no restore and recovery discs or partition). I then installed most of the Lenovo software, including ThinkVantage System Update.
I can do the same, put it to sleep with Fn+F4, but I love the simplicity of just pressing the power button (seeing it is set to do so in Power Management in control panel).

I'm pretty sure I did, but now I can't remember how!
I should have posted back here to update it.
Hope you find the solution before too long!

I feel really silly for this, but I found the solution and it was very simple:
I just needed to press the power button for about a full second or two, then it would go into standby mode. On every other laptop I have owned, you only had to press the power button very briefly, just a stab of a press.
