T43 Freezing

#1 Post by phoenix40uk » Tue Jan 13, 2009 7:15 am

I have a T43 (2668) with ATI graphics chip. Laptop keeps freezing . Happens in Windows and happened when I ran Kubuntu livecd when it got to ther GUI.

Can anyone advises what could be wrong? is it a m/b issue?

Cheers

Try running a RAM test on it. I recommend memtest86 and let it run for a couple of hours.

Hi Harry:

Should have said - I have run memtest and gotten a sucessful result. I have also run a DFT on the laptop and had a successful response from that as well.

Cheers

How often does it freeze? Normally I'd recommend taking off the keyboard partially (leaving it's connector in) or removing it completely and running in a dock. Then apply pressure directly to the ATI chip on the systemboard to see if symptoms change or can be forced. If it's highly intermittent though, your finger would get tired. :D You could also run PC-Doctor tests on the entire machine, concentrating on the GPU.

I've had the same problem and had to get the motherboard replaced to solve the issue. It's a well-documented issue with T43s (mine is the 2668 model). You can search the forum for DIY fixes. Hope this helps.
