I've done this a few times on different ThinkPads including a T41 to "quasi" T42 and it's one that I can highly recommend. It's both fruitful and can be fairly cheap and easy. I was able to find a whole assembly on eBay from a T42p for $50. This allowed for a quick switch, had all the parts right there and had the added benefit of having a Bluetooth antenna already in place as well!

In the end, when I upgraded to a true T42p, I sold off the whole thing for what I gave for it.
Family Daily Drivers- T430s, T530, X220
Work- Sadly, the ThinkPads have gone away...... and replaced by HP ProDesk SFF drone machines :(
Other Projects- Edge 15, Z61m (Titanium)
Historic Retired ThinkPads- T42p, X20, A31p, 701c, 760XD, WorkPad C505

The note above is for 15" screens. All 14" (XGA and SXGA) use the same inverter. (different cables) Since your signature mentions T41, I assume 14" is correct. You must use a panel that was intended for T4x. The 14" T4x SXGA LCDs have a different pin configuration and a generic won't work, and it will create a short that may blow a fuse (or worse).
