Hard drive under right rather than left palm rest

#1 Post by philspec » Tue Jan 18, 2005 8:34 pm

Am I correct that IBM has moved the hard drive from under the left palm rest (in the T30 line) to the right palm rest (in the T40 line) to accommodate the thinner frame? For those who like to leave their palm on the right palm rest while typing, and are bothered by the heat, are there any suggestions about a model where the hard drive is still under the left palm rest?

My hard drive (super fast drive) runs at 35 degrees C or less 90 percent of the time. That is well under body temperature. So I prefer the thinner frame as the heat doesn't impact me. (I know that some people are bothered by the heat). ... JD Hurst

Thanks JD... I think that I must have sensitive hands. It is a little frustrating, because I truly adore the Thinkpad in every other respect, and loved my old T30, but the heat under the right palm rest really bothers me.

I would actually prefer a bulkier thinkpad if they still made them so that I wouldn't run into (what is for me) the heat problem...

Like JD I have a 7K60 in my T40 and I never notice any heat in the palmrest.

I'm using it now and it takes an effort to discern any difference in heat betweeen the right and left palmrests.

If you think the heat on the T4x series is bothersome, you should try owning a Dell.

Compared to these, my T42 is running very cool :-)

I don't believe that for a second. When I'm doing a HDD scan or playing a game that involves plenty of HDD activity the HDD obviously omits more heat. Unless by some miracle it's never happened to you it will affect 99.9% of everyone else, regardless of what HDD you have.

I have a T40 (40GB 5400), T40p (7k60) and a T42 (40GB 5400) and this happens with all of them and everyone else I know who has a T4x series.

Under normal conditions and circumstances then I'd agree that the palm rest shoudn't really warm up, but when it does it's no big issue, the heat has to go somewhere!

What don't you believe? That I don't notice the heat increase or that it doesn't occur?

As I type this the 7K60 HD in my T40 (1.5GHz, 1.5GB RAM, XP SP2) is reporting a temperature of 87F/31C! At this temperature for the HD the amount of heat increase discernible on the palmrest is negligible. Most of the time, probably around 95%, my HD rarely gets above 95F/35C. When I defragged the HD yesterday it went up to 106F/41C, which is about the highest I've ever noted for this HD. I'm not saying it hasn't gone higher, but that's the highest I've ever consciously noted.

For the record, I don't game on this unit, I have a desktop for that. This unit is primarily used for running AutoCAD and some environmental response programs when I'm on the road, obviously along with the "usual" internet access functions, Wordsmithing and spreadsheets.

I have never noted the palmrest to be so warm as to be bothersome.

(Now up to 98F/37C!)

My HD temperature stays at around 30C most of the time unless I am doing some HD intensive task like large file transfer. The highest it ever went, according to mobile meter was like 42C.

One thing that I noticed was that once it warms up it seemed to take fairly long to cool down again to 30C. May be due to lack to fan.

Sorry if I'm asking about something obvious, but is there any IBM temperature monitoring software available?

not that I know of. If there was one I don't think members in this site would point to mobilemeter rather than IBM software.

I think many members here reporting temperature readings are using Mobile Meter. I use that. Google for it, download and it just works. Cheers. ... JD Hurst

I think this is a good design. My R40 on my left burns seriously.

& since my right hand is more active, my left hand rests on the platform & my right hand jumps around.
