Hard drive removal while running..... duh.

#1 Post by jt20 » Thu Jan 15, 2009 9:17 pm

my curiosity often gets the best of me. This time I feel really stupid.

Being new to Thinkpads (t-42), I found a loose cover and started playing with it to ensure nothing was awry.

It went awry... Apparently it was the HD cover that I was messing with and now I have lost my OS.

i bought this laptop used and have a few disks which I have not tried yet.

My main concern is: What damage could be inflicted upon a HD if removed while plugged in and running?

Are the reboot disks available if the ones I have do not work or are incomplete?

many thanks in advance. Please.. taunting to a minimum.

no damage thus far. No reboot required. Must have been a bad connection or ground upon install.

still learning

I had problems with my T41 when I installed the Wifi card. I had to have reinstalled the hard drive 15 times before I could get the freaking thing to boot.
they are similar in design and I must say I was traumatized at first.

there are people here with Recovery CD's and will gladly make you copys for a little money to pay for their time and shipping.

are there any diagrams / parts schematics on this forum for general dissection and repair?

you have to take the Keyboard and palmrest off and it is/goes in the mini PCI slot inside.

if you look for the T4x hardware maintainence manual it will tell you how to do it.

 sorry, I just had to do it

Anyway there IS chance that HDD suffered from some electrical discharge while disconnected running. Considering the fact that for example not all drives for servers ale designed to be hot-plug. Especially there is a chance that you did mechanical damage by shaking the HDD while disconnecting, because read-write heads were moving over the surface. Try to check this HDD using some adapter in PC.

^^ give me a few more weeks..

I was referring to the re-install disks, though.

the computer is functional and required only the proper HD install.

I must say ,however, that IBM made the removal of that drive much to tempting for users like myself. Why?
