HELP!!! Sound Question and Numlk on Startup w/ T42

I have two basic questions I was hoping someone could answer...everytime I startup my computer, the NumLk (number lock) key is on. It's a small hassle, but how do you turn that off permanently? Also, is there any way to mute the thinkpad T42 before startup, say if in you're a library and you don't want the Windows sound bothering people next to you??? Please, somebody help!
