Re: motherboard similiar to 27K9984
All T42's (which come in two different versions: As 14.1" and 15" display models) use the same size motherboard. In the 15" models T42's a so-called "interposer-card" is used to extend the connectors on the motherboard to the edge of the mounting base; see the image at System service parts - ThinkPad T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p. On that page you will find the various T42 motherboards - they differ by having or not having biometric co-processor (fingerprint reader), security chip, and also by having different GPU's.

The specifications for the 2378-R1U can be found there, where you will read that...

... so you need to decide if you want the fingerprint-reader functionality, and if you want to stay with the 32MB ATI Radeon 7500 or want to upgrade. Searching e.g. eBay for a direct replacement I find this which has a fair price tag. Alternatively, see the other possibilities in the above-mentioned Parts List, and/or see the thread Thinkpad T4* Planars for Sale CHEAP!- All have been reflowed and note that baisley write: "I have new and factory refurb T4* & T4*P boards ... inquire if interested.IBM wrote:Original description: P M 725, 256MB RAM, 40GB 5400rpm HDD, 14.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 32MB ATI Radeon 7500, Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), UltraNav, Secure Chip, Fingerprint Reader, Intel 802.11b/g wireless(MPCI), 24x24x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD, 6 cell Li-Ion battery, WinXP Pro
