T42 2378FVU or 2379DXU?
In the thinkpad T42 line with SXGA+ screens the 2378FVU and 2379DXU seem like value sweet spots. I've favored the FVU for it's lighter weight and lower price.
Now that T43s have been announced a T43 26684EU for $2,299 doesn't seem worth it, for my needs as a real estate broker. (A comment by Steve007 to wait a few months for T43 bugs to iron out also influenced me to stay with a T42) It seemed to be the most similar to a T42 2378FVU or 2379DXU of the new T43s.
The FVU comes with a 14" SXGA+ screen, 40HD at 5400, 256MB, 1 yr. warantee. With the Visa discount it's $1,484.10.
The DXU comes with a larger 15" SXGA screen, 60HD at 7200, 512MB, 3 yr. warantee, and bluetooth. $1,799.10 thru Visa discount.
The up cost of $315 seems like a fair price for the extras in the DXU. To add them to the FVU would cost about the same.
I'll use the notebook both in the office and out and about with clients. So portability is a very important factor.

Typically, the 2378XXX has the 1 year warranty and the 2379XXX has the three year warranty for $100 more. The 2378DXU is available with a 1 year warranty $1889 but the 2379DXU is available with the 3 year warranty for $1799.

I am in the same situation. Just for the record i did buy a 2378dxu for my oldest daughter and it was sweet...the only problem was that she found it a mite too large and wanted something a little more portable. So, now i am considering the 2378fvu (great price right now) and also maybe one of the x40's(she loves the way these look and feel she has friend with one). The thoughts of those in this forum regarding this would be appreciated. The primary use would be internet browsing, word processing, and visual studio programming.

I bought the FVU for $1800 (with 3 years warranty upgrade, student price) last year and never looked back. It never disappointed me. For $100 more I got an extra 512MB of RAM from Crucial and recently for $145 I got the 7K60 hard disk from Zipzoomfly. Upgrading is definitely simple and inexpensive.
