No battery or AC power on my T40

#1 Post by John H » Thu Jan 22, 2009 4:01 pm

While running on battery, the T40 suddenly went dead black. I powered on again and ran until the battery was exhausted. I plugged in the AC adapter and got NOTHING. The voltmeter showed that the AC Adapter is delivering 16volts.

I'm guessing that the power board or a fuse blew out.

A few months ago the power plug on the T40 became loose and erratic, so I plugged the T40 into a dock and used it that way with AC power, since it circumvents the erratic power plug. I have a new power plug around here someplace, but I've been dreading opening the T40 up with all those little screws, tho I think I replaced a KB or something a couple years ago.

Aaargh, the screws ... they drive you mad in the end!

Seriously, they are all easy to remove if you have the correct tool. The best one I have is from the tool kit of my MG. It fits perfectly.

I seem to recall it was Harryc who recommended a perfect screwdriver available at Sears shops in the US. We don't have Sears here or I'd probably have bought one. Do a search and you may find his posting.

Lenovo are good chaps too. I knackered a couple of screw heads using an old screwdriver. I phoned Lenovo and they sent me free replacements. Bless them, they sent me a full set! :D

I don't have an MG, I have an old Mazda RX-7, though. I had an MG Sprite in 1959 but I seem to have misplaced it.

MG Sprite are neat little cars, especially the old ones with the bullfrog eyes.
It isn't THAT small, so how could you misplace such a neat car?

As to screwdrivers, get a #0 Phillips in any decent hardware store. Look for Stanley or the like, available worldwide.

I used to own a frogeye. A mate in Oz has one to this day.
Thanks for the advice about a good screwdriver. If it saves us wrecking our screws it will make repairs to our Thinkpads much easier.

I had a 59 beige Sprite I bought new with a factory hardtop, and I added a Judson supercharger for 40% more torque. Wheeeeee!

I don't think I got a #0 Phillips screwdriver with it, though.
