Strange pixel

#1 Post by ThinkPad » Wed Jan 19, 2005 9:59 pm

There is a dead pixel on the top left corner of my screen. But the strange part is that it is not like that all the time.

When I start windows its not there, then after all the start-up programs are loaded it appears. When I shut down wondows it turns back to normal. :?

This sounds like the UltraNav driver bug: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=7108

When it appears, try clicking the middle UltraNav button and it should disappear.

I know its not my laptop, because I have it hooked up to the docking station and the external monitor shows the same thing.

Now if it was a dead pixel on the laptop, it shouldnt show on the other monitor :?

Precisely, did you have any luck with the above suggestion?

The UltraNav bug has nothing to do with actual dead pixels, it just causes corruption of the displayed data (of only a handful of pixels at a time), whether it's on the laptop screen or an external display.

It's very hard to see the pixel from that screenshot ;)

Seriously, try the ultranav trick - press the middle ultranav button (assuming you have it set to scroll and not "magnify" or "neither."

Also, try mousing over the pixel very precisely. Does it change?

The pic was not to show the pixel, but to show to two monitors running simultaneously.

Ah, you've found the (0,0) bug. I had this problem too last year. In order to prevent the (0,0) bug from occuring, you need to uninstall the ATI Radeon driver using the IBM ThinkPad Software Installer.

Once you have done this, Windows will reboot and your display will run off the very slow generic driver, but the pixel (0,0) will reappear.

Reinstall the latest ATI Radeon driver from IBM, but make sure to use the IBM ThinkPad Software Installer to do the install and not just the executable in the package.

For some reason this corrected the problem on my ThinkPad. Let me know if it works.
