T42 monitor falls out when touched

#1 Post by geluidsgolf » Tue Jan 27, 2009 8:32 pm

Dear forum,

My T42 seems to boot without problems and comes into windows XP but when I move it a little bit the whole screen just goes black. My windows is still running so everything seems to be fine. (I can shut down windows with the ALT-F4 command)
I connected an external monitor on it to see if this would go black as well and it does so I have a odd feeling it's the videocard.
Any people who can shed some more light on this subject?

Thanks a million

good day!

I'm sorry to say it is the GPU going south on your T42...read the stickies regarding re-flowing the board and replacing it by an Intel-based one at the top of this forum...

Good luck.

Hi thanks for your quick reply.
That's bad to hear. I got an ATI based videocard this probably means expensive replacement so better just buy a new thinkpad :(
What happened to the days our thinkpads where build as tanks!

Got information from jamiphar about the pricing for repair of GPU "$165-$185 total (including the return shipping to EU)". So you can consider repair before you will sell.

I understand from signature your that your T42 is a 2374-D38 the specifications for which are:
Based on 2373-6ZG: P M 735, 1GB RAM, 60GB 5400rpm HDD, 14.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 32MB ATI Radeon 7500, 24x-8x DVD, IBM 802.11a/b/g wireless(MPCI), Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), UltraNav, Secure Chip, 6 cell Li-Ion battery, WinXP Home
... and based on that I suggest you review the thread Thinkpad T4* Planars for Sale CHEAP!- All have been reflowed as an alternative to having your present mobo shipped all the way to USA, being repaired, and being shipped back. Note that forum-member baisley also write: "I have new and factory refurb T4* & T4*P boards ... inquire if interested".

Finally, in the thread Compatability T42-T40 motherboard (more precisely in this post) you will find a few links to fellows in England who offer to repair T42 GPU-failed mobo's... and the inter-EU shipping is of course far less expensive, so maybe worth also to consider? I also vaguely remember reading about a fellow in Poland who offer this service, but unfortunately I can't find that information right now... :-( Anyway, I guess that there may be even more such repair-shops in mainland Europe (perhaps even in the Netherlands?); maybe Google can help?

Good luck with having your T42 repaired! :thumbs-UP:
