Question about system backup

I've backed up my whole HD using IBM's utility and an external USB HDD. I chose to back up all partitions and all folders. I got a couple of questions about that:

1) I don't see my files in the external HDD. Not a single image file. Is it supposed to work like this? It must be hidden somehow. I know there's something in the external HDD because of the "used space" reported.

2) The size used in the external HDD is 20% (I guess) smaller than what I have stored in my thinkpad. Does the backup process involve any kind of compression? If not, there's something wrong.

Let me know how that works out. I should be getting my T42 in a few days and I want to play with that feature also...
