If you use the model (2373) and the serial-number to make a Warranty Status lookup you will find this which state that it is a 2373-BV6 which is very far from being a T42p. It seems that the seller is either not entirely honest, or (at least) does not know the difference between a T42 and a T42p...

No, apart from the fact that if a machine has a HDD and XP on it, go into display settings and check for GPU...which is ATi FireGL T2 on all T42p units, 128MB VRAM.

If the machine has no OS on it, burn a "live" Linux CD and take it with you...Ubuntu or Mint will identify most of the hardware with no problems...

And you've owned an A31p so you know what a FlexView should look like... :D

Good luck.

If you consider buying an used ThinkPad (e.g. this T42/p?) then you might benefit from having a look in the thread Would u say that a used T42P is reliable? + Things To Check (note that this is a two-page thread!) and see what you should check for, if having the opportunity. Also, of course, check its official specifications on IBM's site against those claimed by the seller.

Some T42/p's (although only US-models) are found in the ltwbook (see a link in the above-mentioned thread), but not all, so this is what you do to find the specifications on IBM's site:

1) Go to www.ibm.com,
2) Enter the model/type number (e.e. 2373-Q1U) in the upper, right "Search-box",
3) Hit "Search",
4) Choose the first hit returned.

Note at this specifications page that you have a Waranty Lookup link at the left side. If you don't remember the URL of this Warranty Lookup page (and have forgotten this thread!), and if you don't have the complete model/type number, but only - like in your case - the model (2373), then simply type "Warranty Status" in the Search-field in the upper right corner of www.ibm.com and choose the first hit; this will take you to the Warranty Lookup page. Here, try enter e.g. 2373 and the serial-number you gave in your first post. The returned information now will also contain the model (e.g. like in your case BV6) and so you have the entire model/type: 2373-BV6. Again, go to www.ibm.com, enter "2373-BV5" in the Search-field, search, choose the first hit, and there you have the specifications.

Pretty low spec T42:

Product: ThinkPad T42 2373-BV6
Based on 2373-6YM: P M 725(1.6GHz), 512MB RAM, 40GB 5400rpm HDD, 15in 1024x768 LCD, 32MB ATI Radeon 7500, 24x24x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD, Intel 802.11b wireless(MPCI), Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), UltraNav, Secure Chip, 6 cell Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro

If it's a T42p it should say T42p on the lower right hand side of the display bezel. Also, check the display type as described above.

Here's the listing on the NZ site Trademe
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =200619031

Seller lists the GPU as Ati mobility Radeon 9000. T42P's were never fitted with that chip.

Seller has bad feedback and limited trading history. And the bids on the auction have been placed by a brand new member registered the same day the auction started - coincidence ?
