Clean Install Windows XP

#1 Post by cb » Fri Jan 21, 2005 11:59 am

Hi,

I'm having some trouble with my T42 (2373):
I've installed Linux and removed the r&r partition in this process.
Now I'm trying to reinstall Windows XP with a non-IBM installation CD.
I've booted from CD, setup responds with "Checking Hardware..." and just before the routine jumps into the "blue screen" environment (license agreement, partitioning, basic installation) the system hangs. The screen stays black, the HDD led indicates that setup is accessing the hard disk.
I can now wait for minutes, but nothing happens. Setup is stuck, Windows XP installation therefore fails.

Anyone having an idea why this is happening?
I've read several threads here where people were reporting that they have successfuly clean installed Windows XP. Perhaps someone of those has encountered the same problem?

Thank You

Works fine for me.

If you're still using an original XP installation CD, I recommend you copy the whole /I386/ folder down onto a system, then download the latest service pack from MS, and *then* run the command-line option to slipstream the service pack into the /I386/ folder.

Next, wipe the T42 HDD, and then copy your new slip-stream-ified /I386/ folder onto the T42. Boot off a generic DOS disk, and then launch the XP installation off the T42 drive.

Should work like a champ.

Oh, and I hope you saved the /IBMTOOLS/ folder out of the preload before you erased it, or else there's about 10-15 hotfixes from MS that you can't get anywhere else.

Thank you for your answer.
However, I've not yet tried your suggestion, as I have some doubts regarding the basic approach: AFAIK the service pack merely adresses windows components used in the working operating system.
My problem is related to the setup executable in the DOS environment. And I have the feeling, that this file is not updated by an upgrade to SP 2.

Well, I'm not using Windows too often, so I hope this unavailable hotfixes aren't too important.
