Errors on startup and shut down

#1 Post by nfialkoff » Sat Feb 07, 2009 10:33 am

Hi,
I have a T42 running XP with sp3.
Please note that my system was recently renewed, wiped out HD and reinstalled OS.
I recently installed openoffice and then the problems started.
As a result I uninstalled openoffice and itunes which were both giving me errors.
I ran the system check which fixed some problems.
I also removed Java which I think was a mistake.

I am still having problems so I will list them now and see if anyone out there has some advice:

On boot up, the OS boots fine but then I get this error:
Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
Error signature:
zAppName : svchost.exe szAppVer : 5.1.2600.5512
szModName : fastprox.dll szModVer : 5.1.2600.5512 offset : 0002fc01
Error report contents:
C:\DOCUME~1\Nikah\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER96ba.dir00\svchost.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Nikah\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER96ba.dir00\appcompat.txt

Also, I receive this error when I try to open the volume control:
There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, Go to Control Panel and Other Hardware..etc

Then, when I shut down, the blue "Shutting down" window hangs so I have to manually shut down by holding down the on/off button for 10 seconds.

Thank you in advance for your time,
Nikah

Did you install all the required IBM/Lenovo drivers and programs?

As you had iTunes installed/removed, I would suggest to re-install Windows again from scratch.

HI, Let me backtrack more, I was having computer problems at the end of last year. I sent it to GeekSquad and everything was running fine for abut 1 month after they cleaned out the HD and reinstalled windows with all of the necessary drivers and programs. Then I installed openopffice and problems started occurring which I included in my original post

Thanks,
Nikah

OpenOffice is less likely to cause problems.
iTunes is a well-known sinner!
If you don't have them yet, post a WTB (want-to-buy) ad in the Marketforum for a set of T42 XP-Factory-Restore CDs.
That includes XP and all the IBM drivers/pgms.

Thanks for your quick reply. Does this mean I should start from scratch?

Thanks, I posted a WTB ad. I may just order them from Lenovo. Do you think that's better?

Thanks,
Nikah

Also, can you let me know why iTunes is such a problem?

Thanks again.

As to iTunes, just do a google search with "itunes causing problems"

Restore/Recovery disks from Lenovo cost from $45.- upwards, in our Marketforum it can be quite a bit cheaper.

Thank you to everyone for your responses. I followed the links and tried various fixes to no avail. I ordered the Restore/Recovery CD's and will start from scratch.
Thank you again for your support.

Nikah
