"Serviceable Used Part" for warranty replacement?

#1 Post by Matt » Sat Jan 22, 2005 3:28 am

So my HD started clicking as others have experienced, I called IBM and they said they'd send out a new HD. I get it today, and it's labeled "Serviceable Used Part". They sent me a used drive?!?! WTF!!! Is this standard practice? Should I call em back and tell em to send me a NEW one? I called about the keyboard thing several months ago and they didn't send me a used keyboard! I had Maxtor pull this on me a couple years ago on a warranty claim, and the "serviceable used" drive from them went T.U. about a year later.

Any advice?

this is standard practice..

it bit me in the [censored] once when i did a warranty for a customer and then sent the dead drive to hiotachi for replacement..
got a (i thought) new drive back..
sold it to another customer..
when he opened the sealed bag it had the same sticker on it..
"serviceable used part"..

so i had to replace it with a new drive that i knew WAS new..

there is a firmware update that makes these noisy drives go quiet..
also on the hitachi site there is as utility that will adjust these settings and make the noise go away or tone WAY down..

So the clicking is not a sign of impending hardware failure? The firmware update will do it? If so, great--I'd really rather not have to jump through the hoops of moving everything to another drive as I don't own one of those optical bay HD adapters. (incidentally Bill, what to those run?)

Hey Bill,

Any idea on where we could find the firmware update? Mine clicks so loud it wakes me up sometimes.
