Replacing T42p minipci wireless card

#1 Post by sethstorm » Sat Jan 22, 2005 2:34 pm

Since I do have issues with the card (not as in hardware functionality, but with Atheros's misguided software policies regarding their "firmware") and the slot for minipci isnt where it should be, where is the slot for the minipci card so that it can be replaced with a more suitable (not Intel either) alternative?

Hello,

The access to the minipci slot is unfortunately not easy in the T4x series. You can find the guidelines in IBM's Hardware Maintenance Manual:

Firstly check out the FAQ at the start of this forum.
Secondly, do a search in this forum on the "alternatives" to the Intel or IBM mini-pci wireless cards - you'll find that other variants are not recognised by the machine after installation - beware.

I don't understand why you think the mini-pci card is not where it's supposed to be? Did you get the only Thinkpad where the card slot was not under the keyboard?? Access to this is perfectly staightforward - using the HMM is obviously preferable to avoid problems.

Well yes and no. It's easy in the sense that no special tools are required to get access to the minipci card and the directions in the HMM are quite thorough.

However the access could have been easier (i.e. alongside the RAM socket which is where I think sethstorm thought the slot should have been).

The T30 had its mini-card socket in a bay underneath alongside the memory bay. In addition, both memory boards are available in the memory bay. The T30 was much simpler in this regard, but my T41 is a much better and lighter machine, and I can live with the location under the palm rest. ... JD Hurst
