Thanks for the info Johan!

I too am pretty confident it will work, just wanted to ask and see if anyone had any first-hand experience with the T43.
Worse case, if it doesn't want to play nice, I'll just throw it in the PATA Ultrabay and use it that way (it will still save me from carrying around an external USB HDD).
I bet I could probably also boot from it in the Ultrabay & completely remove the primary HDD. Hmm, something to try!

BTW, I assume this is the largest PATA/IDE drive currently made correct?
I checked Hitachi's, Seagate, & WDC's sites and almost all of their drives are now SATA.

I wish I could reply specificly to your question, but unfortunately I cannot, since I am a "T42'er". However, I just wanted to report here that I received one of these WD3200BEVE HDD's the other day, and installed it in a T42p. Initialized, partitioned, formatted, and then cloned it (using Acronis True Image ver. 9), all under Win XP Pro SP2, everything went with no problems. The T42p'er "sees" all 320 GB (300 GB binary, as usual), so no BIOS limitation with respect to that size.

I have now run with it for a couple of days, and the initial observations is that it is quite fast and cool, although I cannot say for sure whether or not it has a slight amount of periodical "whooosh" (seeking or calibration?) noise; not the clicking noise that some WD HDD's have been known to have... but still something clearly audible, for noise-picky users such as I!

I hope to return later with some more feedback. But, the message for now: This drive works OK ina T42 w/Win XP Pro SP2.

- just a quick update: This 320 GB WD PATA HDD will give the "2010" error in T43's - see the thread T43 320GB 2010 error... :-(

- but fortunately I'm a T42'er... :-)

For anyone who's interested, B&H has the retail version of the Western Digital WD3200BEVE. This has a 3-year warranty. Picked mine up today.

Well I've cloned the 80 to the 320 and all went well. I got an ultra 2.5" usb enclosure from tiger direct and put the 80 in it and the 320 inside as the primary drive. I had left my drive clone cd at my mom's when I replaced her hard drive so I downloaded a program called easeus disk clone mainly because my friend reccommended it, and it worked great but I also had to download their disk partition software which btw was also free to resize it all together because it just cloned the 80 gig partition and the cd that I have will do it automatically for you whether you are upsizing or downsizing. The wd 320 is great you can hardly even hear the drive at all and the t42 seems to be faster as well.

I can't say if I'm hearing the same noise from the WD3200BEVE that Johan is, but I would describe it as sounding like the ticking of a quartz clock; it occurs every couple of minutes. I guess we'll just have to wait until there's more user feedback to see if this is something to be concerned about.

I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary with mine but it is a lot quieter than the hitachi 80 I replaced it with.

OK, after several days of using the WD3200BEVE I am reasonably sure that the laptop is running a lot hotter than with the Samsung HM160HC.

To update, I asked WD about the clicking/ticking noise in the WD3200BEVE; they said this was not normal and it should be replaced. I'm waiting for the new one to arrive.

I just got this drive running on my T41: see http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 32#p508332

The drive is definitely quieter than the 7200rpm 60gb Hitachi drive I pulled out. I no longer hear clicking every time the heads move.
