Configuring a light weight T4x machine - < 5lbs. complete

#1 Post by underclocker » Fri Feb 20, 2009 5:19 pm

I've had the somewhat unique opportunity to have many (more than a dozen) T4x machines completely disassembled at one time. While it wasn't fun at all (well maybe a little), I did find out something very interesting. The same parts can weigh different amounts, which makes the overall machine weigh significantly less.

For instance, there can be a 2-3 ounce spread between the weight of the standard XGA displays found in T4x machines. Combo CDRW/DVD drives can weigh from about 5.3 oz. to 6.3 oz., a one ounce spread. Wifi adapters can vary in weight depending upon the manufacturer and model, by as much as .2 oz. Memory sticks can vary by .1 oz. Hard drives can vary by .5 oz. or more. Six cell batteries can vary by over 2 oz. You get the picture. Not all T4x's, even when identically spec.'d, weigh the same.

By picking and choosiing light parts, I've been able to assemble a T4x machine that weighs 4lbs. 13 oz. That is complete with battery and optical drive. I am pretty sure if I tried harder, it would be 4lbs. 12oz. Anyway, I finally understood why some machines weigh just under 5 lbs. and some 5 lbs. 3 oz., it's just luck of the draw.

All that being said, I am amazed that T40/T41/T42/T43/T60/T61 & T61 14.1" widescreen machines all weigh about 5 lbs. even - or less if you pick your parts very carefully.

They also have a smaller screen (89in^2 versus 95in^2) and holes bored in their keyboards....
