Which processor is faster?

#1 Post by boris » Sat Feb 21, 2009 2:03 am

I have a T42 with a:

Q442A136 SL7GL
RH80536 1500/2M processor

I think that is 1.5 Ghz.

I also have a

RH80535 1600/1M processor

that I know is a 1.6 GHz from a T41.

Which is faster? I would think the 1.6, but I am sure that the 2M means something in comparison to the 1M.

Any opinions?

It depends on what you are doing. Of course, 1.6 > 1.5, but a cpu-intensive program with code larger than 1 megabyte would be faster on the 1.5/2M.

I would stick to the 1.5 just because it can be undervolted more.

The 1M and 2M are the internal caches on the CPU in MegaBytes.
The better CPU is the one with the larger cache, as aaa mentioned.

I think clock per clock 2mb chips are 5-10 percent faster anyway, but in realtime, the difference would be minimal.

I say it will be close, but for some reason, 1.6's have always felt faster than 1.5's to me, even Dothan 1.5's. I think clock speed wins out for making XP feel fast.

Why not benchmark the two? The Dothan might excel at some tests, but I think the Banias would win out overall. Try this free utility --> http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php
