No those disks have different drivers. And ibm has built in a security against installing it on a wrong device as for as I know :)

Yes, you can use the CDs- however, you must download the correct drivers from the IBM page. There is not "security": all recovery CDs work on IBM systems (e.g. the A31 CDs function on T23 systems- I didn't try the t42 CDs though).

Oh, well, then I am going to try the XP Prof install of my X40 on a T42 home version :D

Actually, you might get lucky. I used my T40 recovery CDs on my 600E and it worked just fine! I think most of the recovery CDs have the complete complement of XP hardware drivers plus the specific new hardware drivers on that thinkpad model. Give it a try!

Of course, we ONLY do this for test purposes as we all know that it's illegal!

will the new T43 Product Recovery CD's work on T42?

i suspect not, since T43 has drastically different hardware/drivers...

eg: different video processing unit/drivers
different PCI bus structure

Certainly, you'll just have to install the correct drivers.

Not necessarily... If you purchase an OEM copy and the CD got damaged this could prove quite helpful. I've done that with my Dell Windows 2000 disks back when I had an Inspiron 8000.

Will my T42 (2373-F1G)'s recovery cd work on my T42 (2373-JXG)?

I have a recovery cd set form my previous T42, and I want to restore it to my new T42 (which has a different OS language).

And what about the system info and other machine specific things.

When I press the Ibm Access which machine's data will be displayed? Old, or new?

It seems to me that the warranty and parts info comes from a file in Documents and Settings\All users\Application data\ibm\Access.
There is an XML file with all the parts installed on the system. How can I chane it to a new one?

Will the IBM see that on my machine changed the OS?

Will I loose the warranty?

The new data will be shown (I think these are bios data)- but I am not sure. If not, just replace the xml file.

Of course you don't loose the warranty if you install a different os.

recovery disc didnt work...

#15 Post by snickervicker » Mon Feb 07, 2005 1:09 am

Hmm ok I finally got around to trying to upgrade. I popped in my new HD, put in the R&R CD from my T42, and booted up my T20. The CD loads up the R&R program where I click on the link "Restore factory contents" option, and I just get the dialog "The IBM Product Recovery function has been removed from this system". Has anyone successfully done this with their T20?

thanks for the help.
