Recovery And Back Up Of Hard Drive

Recovery And Back Up Of Hard Drive

I am currently in the process of doing a complete re-image of of a spare hard drive for my T40 laptop. I am using a set of IBM recovery CDs for my model to recreate the recovery partition and restoring from there. After I do all of the updates I intend to create a back-up image of the entire drive to include the hidden recovery partition and want to know if Ghost will see and image that hidden partition? The reason I ask because I have tried this before on a drive that did contain the partition but it never got copied to the image. If Ghost will/can not copy this hidden partition what software can?

Thanks and regards.

I have used Rescue and Recovery and it recreates everything from the point at which you made the image, including the hidden partition containing R&R.
I was very impressed.

Let's hope it works for you. However, if you prefer the belt and braces approach then take another copy to an external HDD or DVD/CDs. Just in case ... :)

I am not sure that I understand what you are saying.(?) Are you implying that after I complete the new build that there is an installed IBM application that will create a backup image of the hard drive? What is this application because I do not see a "Rescue and Recovery" application in the Access IBM menu but I do see an "IBM Rapid Restore PC" option. Does this option create the back up that you refer to?

Well I have answered my own question in regards to using Ghost - it does not see the hidden partition and obviously will not copy it if it does not see it. :( Is there another imaging software out there that does see the hidden partition and subsequently copies it?

The reason I am persistent in finding a imaging solution that includes the hidden partition is because I am planning in the near future to refurbish older IBM laptops (T3x - T4x) for resale and would be greatly discouraged if I Had to use the recovery disks for every laptop I plan to restore, that would just eat into my turn-around time and time is money.

Thanks for any direction that anyone can provide.

Rescue & Recovery version 4.21.0016 can be downloaded from Lenovo's website. It replaces the very old IBM Rapid Restore program.

clonezilla worked for me: from one 20GB hd to another 20GB hd it copied the
hidden restore partition so that now, when the target drive is installed, "f11"
gives a complete virgin reinstallation of the OS (taiwanese XP-home:-).

clonezilla constitutes a bootable CD that provides a point-click interface to the unix
utility "dd" the Digital Dumper. I found it easy to use once I noticed that
the response 'Y' upper case is not recognized as 'y' lower case, nor vice versa.
the way up and the way down are the same (heraclitus)
