on-screen display

My on-screen volume, brightness, etc. display used to work. After I went to Display Properties/Settings/Advanced/On Screen Display and tried to change things there, on screen display ceased to work. Now, when I change volume, all I get is a small dot. I tried un-installing and re-installing On-Screen Display application, but it did not help.
Any suggestions?

I used search and received this:
"No posts were found because the word on-screen is not contained in any post."

I simply used "OSD dot" and got the above thread as one of the first results
