T42, UJ-852 (S) Firmware and Intel Chipset drivers
This post could be aither in T4x or in T6x forums. As I own a T42 and mine is intended for this one, I put here, but I feel a good idea would be to have any administrator putting a link in the T6x forum pointing to this post.
I finally bought an UJ-852 in eBay for my T42. It was announced as *new* and "new version/release faster than the IBM Lenovo ones".
I got it las week and externally seems to have all what an official IBM/Lenovo is supposed to have, the big label covering all the upside of the drive.
But some extrange things occured:
1.- When I inserted it for the first time, ths system started the installation and at the end of it, the message "an error occured, your device could not be usable" came. I rebooted the system and it seemed to work OK and no yellow question mark in the hardware device administration.
2.- In the hardware device administration list it is listed as "CD-ROM Unit" and not as "Matshita UJ....." as my old UJDA765 was.
3.- Looking at the driver details, it says: "IDE\CDROMMATSHITA_DVD-RAM_UJ-852S_______FA66", my old UJDA765 was: "IDE\CDROMMATSHITA_UJDA765_DVD/CDRW_______1.70" the difference, on top of the device itself is that in my old device it was "UJDA765_DVD/CDRW" (model/type), in the new one s "DVD-RAM_UJ852S" (type model)
4.- The firmware level seems to be FA66. If I go to the Lenovo site, it seems that the last firmware level for the DVD multi drives is RB02.
5.- Finally, I already recorded a couple of DVDs without any problem and both of them worked OK. But today I tried to listen to an Audio CD (standard, bought in a music shop) and it was not recognized by the UJ-852S, neither ar audio or as a CD. I tried with the old UJDA765 and it did perfectly.
Any comments from anyone specially regarding points 2, 3 and 4 will be very welcomed.
Regards.

Re: UJ-852 (S) Firmware
1. It's ok. By the way, 'hot' remove/insert is working normally?
2. No matter how it is listed. But you can reinstall intel chipset drivers, this may fix it.
3,4 Interesting... This drive may be OEM, not genuine lenovo drive.

Re: UJ-852 (S) Firmware
tporter, thanks.
"hot" remove/insert seems to work OK (I cannot do many test because my laptop is suffering the ATI GPU trouble and whenever I raise it, it blocks.... I'm in the way to have it fixed either in the USA or in the UK.
Where could I find the Intel chipset drivers? (I'm not sure they are in the IBM/Lenovo support site)
Yes, this is what I'm feeling, it could be an OEM, but as far as I understand all these drives where "OEM like", manufactured by Panasonic/Matshita (or LG) for IBM. What is interesting is what I said, it has the large IBM/Lenvo label in the upside face.

New version is herefje wrote: Where could I find the Intel chipset drivers? (I'm not sure they are in the IBM/Lenovo support site)
imho, no need to worry about oem/genuine in this case, the drive itself manufactured in the same fab as lenovo one

Re: UJ-852 (S) Firmware
Thanks, I went to the Intel site, but this gave to me another question, anyone knows which Intel chipset my T42 could have (2373-F2G) ? Or where could I find it out?
Thanks
Thanks

tporter,
thanks, I already downloaded it, but will not be able to test till I get back my T42 from repairing (reflowing) the GPU.

Re: UJ-852 (S) Firmware
Is there an RPC firmware for this drive?
- T61 - 6465CTO - T9500 - 15.4" LG WSXGA+ - 8GB OCZ- 120GB EVO 850 SSD - X3100 - Win 8.1 Pro 64-bit
X301 - 2774W8Q - U9400 - 13.3" BOEHYDIS WXGA - 8GB Elpida - 128GB C400 mSATA SSD - 4500MHD - Win 10 Pro 64-Bit
Re: UJ-852 (S) Firmware
Does anyone know how to do a "dump" (backup) of the firmware it currently has? (For the case one would like to install the latest IBM/Lenovo firmware and afterwards discover thet it was better with the one (FA66) it currently has....

Re: UJ-852 (S) Firmware
As far as i know, there are no RPC-1 or modded firmware for UJ-xxx, UJDA-xxx drives.Radioguy wrote:Is there an RPC firmware for this drive?
It's firmware is very complicated and no 'hack' exist yet.
No software for dumping also. However you can't flash lenovo firmware to it, i think.
You may look here too.

Re: UJ-852 (S) Firmware
I have the same feeling about RPC1 fw for Panasonic. The RPC1 site states it in several posts.
BUT why cannot they be flashed with Lenovo Firmware? Looking at
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-63596
It seems to be one of the supported ones, even the manufacture date of my UJ852S seems to be October 2007, much later than the ref. Lenovo FW andf this is the reason I'm not very convinced to change the one it has ("FA66")by the RB02 of Lenovo if I'm not able to dump (save) previously the currently flashed one.
Thus my question about any way to dump (save) the one currently in the drive.

Tporter, only for general information. As soon as I got back my laptop from reflowing the GPU in the UK, I installed the Intel Chipset drivers you pointed to and it gave to me problems. System started to give continous "USB Unrecognized Device" errors, with no device connected to the USB ports, so, probably they came from the USB Host itself I believe. Aditionally, Bluetooth didn't work OK either.tporter wrote: T42 uses i855PM. Drivers from my link will work, however it's not writed
It will install automatically...
So I went to the Lenovo device driver download site and downladed the most recent version they have there for the Intel chipset, which is oss206ww version for Lenovo and it installs as Intel version 4.20.1009.
Since then, Bluetooth works OK and no USB errors.
I don't care as how the UJ-852S is recognized, I know it is a DVDRW and it seems to work Ok as such, but of course I do prefer the Lenovo drivers that don't give errors...
Anyway, thanks for your help.
Rgds.
