Help me to locate the bios chip please

#1 Post by athlonus » Sun Mar 08, 2009 3:50 am

Hello,

I have a bad mainboard for a t43 with a good bios and a good board with a bad bios. I am able to handle chip replacements with some tools. I need to know which chips are the actual bios. I know the small atmel is for security. But I am looking for the bios eprom. Any help is more than welcome! Thanks! :?:

Would you mind enlighten those of us who are not that familar with BIOS'es how a "bad bios" is characterized? Exactly what makes it "bad"? Furthermore: How do you know that the motherboard itself is "good" when you cant access it owing to the "bad bios"??

Thanks in advance for a clarification!

I believe you are not going to be able to replace the BIOS chip and get going again. Administrative security is kept in multiple places that are all tied together to make it harder to defeat. I won't answer more specific questions, because that would violate forum rules. Sorry. Anyway, the BIOS chip itself is under the PC card cage on the top surface of the board.

The bios is bad because of an interrupted update. The other mainboard is just the same but having graphics problems. In this situation I assume replacing the working bios chip to the other board with bad graphics will make it work. This is how I clarify the issue.

I expect that you will get either 4 sets of 4 beeps or a 0192 error if you replace your chip, but it is free to try.

I don't have a board in front of me with the PC card cage removed, but it often has a white adhesive sticker over it and it is made by SST.

So you are talking about a two sided longer chip right?

Interesting - but I can't see it working as the security sub system is on another place on the mobo and I believe that the two are linked together. :?

T40 boards had their security on a small sub board. This was a pain as second hand mobos were sometimes missing the security board and - as you had to use the original one - no other security board would work.

The security board has been integrated onto the mainboard since T41.
