chip identification T41 2373 1HU 1.4 GHz *PIC*
I have got a roasted chip just to the right of the pcmcia box.it is the middle of the 3 big black chips adjacent to the pcmcia slot(the one below the silver coloured chip].what chip is that...I want to know for curiosity sake what is toasted .The board has been declared untouchable by the repair shops here.
I have opened up all the screws and dont know whre to put them back anyway. I even procured the full set of screws from
Ibm at a ubreasonable cost thinking that it would come with instructions as to which screw goes where..[IBM outsmarted me..]

no , no.
That manual helped me to open the box and realize it was not all titanium.
I got the courage to open up everthing. That is the successfull half of the episode.
I got all the screws and the components. I can place the components as they are big .
I donot know anything about screws. Other than trial and error i see know way of putting back the screws[well, most of them].
As the board is roasted anyway i have not used the screw set i purchased .[ I will use it on my yet working 1.6 Ghz T41,
a very good light machine

The Hardware Maintenance Manual that Harry linked to will give you the information you need in order to determine which screw goes where. Each diagram has the screw size (length and diameter). It's just a matter if measuring them before you re-install them. As far as your toasted component, if you can post a link to a picture then that might help.
edit: Clarification on screw sizes... "M2" means metric, 2mm diameter; "M2.5" is 2.5mm diameter.
edit2: Here's what I found on one of my dead T41 motherboards:

If the component I've circled in red is the one you are asking about, then it's a Texas Instruments TPS2214A (Dual-slot PC Card Power Switches).

Re: chip identification T41 2373 1HU 1.4 GHz *PIC*
Thanks a lot.
Yes, the chip you have circled is the one i wanted to know about.
It had gone bust with the services of a good engineer . I will have to look for some other cause then , as to why my board
refuses after that to boot. Anyway , even in its termination i have learnt a lot.
i will try putting the screws , now that i know a little about what that m means in the hardware manual. I have a good
ruler with centimetre marks for measurement.

Re: chip identification T41 2373 1HU 1.4 GHz *PIC*
The chip is the power controller for the PC card slots. It is certainly replacible if you are sure that is the problem
Re: chip identification T41 2373 1HU 1.4 GHz *PIC*
Thanks.
When it got toasted there was a lot of smoke which came out and when i saw the region around that chip it is also
probably roasted. I dont know how to post photos otherwise it is a site worth preserving.Probably a lot of other damage might have been done.
After liquid spills I know now that the laptop must be completely opened and cleaned so I am acquiring screw handling skills.
Ps: I had never used that card slot in 4 years that the T41 was operational.
