No, that is a desktop drive.

The biggest 7200 option is the old 100gb 7k100, which is also discontinued.

There are more 5400 options, WD came out with the 320gb WD3200BEVE recently.

Note that bigger drives are also faster.

There are a number of factors relating to HDD performance and spindle speed is only one of them. Although 7200rpm PATA HDDs are out of production, there are a number of options in the 5400rpm range. Although many of the manufacturers seem to be falling out of the PATA arena, Western Digital appears to the current standard bearer with not only the 250Gb drive, but recently coming out with a 320Gb drive. Although neither are 7200rpm, the higher areal density of these drives should theoretically pack the bits of info closer together and therefore faster to access. Of course they also have a 8Mb cache which is a big help as compared to older drives with there 2Mb caches on top of there 4200rpm spindle speed.

I believe Seagate also has larger 5400rpm drives and their may still be a couple of Hitachi and Samsung models as well, but Fujitsu has fallen by the wayside. Newegg is a good place to look and use as a resource even if you don't end up buying from them. Just remember to look for 2.5" form factor, PATA or ATA interface.

With respect to your options, I suggest you see the threads 320GB pata drive? and T4x (Type 2378) maximum hard drive capacity? and T42 replacement HDD - sata interface ok and Western Digital Scorpio 2.5" 5400 Hard Drives... Any Opinions? and T40 & HDD upgrade.

See a list of suitable HDD's at Newegg - the Seagate Momentus 5400.3 80GB (ST980815A) and the 160 GB 8ST9160821A) are very quiet. Quite a few ThinkPad users are also happy about the Samsung HM160HC - see e.g. the thread T41: Which HDD to buy? .. and Samsung HM160HC issues. Note that if you get a Seagate HDD, you can get the free Seagate-HDD-specific version of Acronis True Image --> DiscWizard.

Note that no 2.5" PATA HDD's are no longer listed at Seagate's homepage.. so better get one or two drives before too late!

I've tried a couple of the newer high capacity 5400rpm drives in my T4x computers. While they are somewhat faster than the original 40Gb drives, due to the higher areal density, they still were no where near as fast as my one remaining 100Gb Hitachi 7k100 drive. Alas, these drives are no longer available so you will just have to find the fastest 5400rpm drive available. I've seen some tests on NotebookReview so you might want to google up some comparative reviews.

I just recently ordered a wd 320 to replace the original hitachi 80 gig. Newegg still has some choices left between seagate and wd for pata. I bought mine from zipzoomfly and saved $10 than what newegg wanted. Also I just got a 2nd hd caddy so I can clone them. I really like the hitachi's though, I replaced the 4.3 in my old thinkpad 390 with a 60gig, and the 80 has been great just that it's not large enough.

Very timely thread. Since by ill T42 is now back from Superior, I would like to give her a bigger Hard Drive. Per the forum recommendation I am looking at this. Is there a better price for this drive somewhere else, or perhaps is there a better drive altogether I should be looking at?

Thank you in advance!

I know that for the most part on here that a majority of the people recommend hitachi drives. Honestly I don't know a lot about notebook drives as I'm more of a desktop tech. but I'm learning along. For desktops I would use maxtor drives and I read later that there was mixed reviews about them either you loved or hated them but fortuneatly I never had any issues with them ever, but seagate has now bought out maxtor. With maxtor being phased out I asked some friends that are also in the field what they thought and one said seagate and the other wd. I don't really consider myself to be loyal to any one brand but I do usually look at the size cost ratio and go from there. If hitachi had an ide 320gig I'm sure that I would've boughten it over the wd since I am partial to the hitachi's for notebook drives.

To answer more of your questions usually I buy almost always from newegg, then tiger direct would be 2nd. I did buy my new drive from zipzoomfly which is my first time ever purchasing anything from them so we'll see how it goes. When I was in college I had a friend that always spoke very highly of them and I just now finally got around to check them out. I'm getting mine next mon. so I'll let everyone know how it went after I clone it.
