Problems with WXP PRO installation

#1 Post by Metallo » Thu Mar 19, 2009 4:19 am

Hi,

I finally got a new HDD, a WD2500BEVE :)
I installed WXP PRO SP2 (will update to SP3) but much to my surprise, I got the following drivers not installed:

Ethernet Controller
Multimedia Audio Controller
PCI Modem
Unknown device
Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

They all have a ? under device manager

Now, this is really something I do not understand, is it possible that the WXP CD doesn't include those drivers??
I tried to install them again, searching in the CD but no luck.

Now, obviously I need to download them from the internet, but do not know which ones, maybe I should have a look at the Lenovo website, I guess.

Another question, do I need to download a specific ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 driver from the ATI website?
If yes, where is it?? I just cannot find it.

Thank you for your valuable suggestions

Try see the thread Driver/Software Help Please - there may be help! The "ThinkVantage System Update" will get you what you need (or is supposed to so!).

Hi Johan,

Yes, I am aware I can download the drivers from Lenovo, but I'd rather prefer to have the windows ones.
Point is, I had serious problems with the wireless card when using the Lenovo driver, the inbuilt windows one works great!

Any idea regarding the ATI Radeon Mobility 7500 driver?

Thank you
Alex

The ATI drivers are available from here. Lenovo's drivers are available from Drivers and software - ThinkPad T42, T42p.

You may also want to try the 3D-ATI mobility powerplay OpenGL driver's (see troubadix's signature).

The ATI link is "Unauthorized Download" and doesn't reply my question, in principle, I don't see a suitable drive to download in the ATI website for the 7500 Mobility.

I will try the other suggestions, but really don't know which one to choose, thinkpad drivers or 3D-ATI because I don't know the difference :(

Thanks

Latest ATi drivers won't install, it will cite system incompatibility and quit. You should use Mobility Modder if you want to use ATi's latest drivers (and not Lenovo's, which are several versions/years behind).

My experience has been completely opposite. Windows couldn't even install its own latest driver for Atheros, and I was stuck with whatever system restore shipped with, meaning a driver from 2004.

I used Access IBM Software Installer to uninstall everything that came with Access IBM, including all drivers, and eventually uninstalled Access IBM.

I then installed ThinkVantage System Update, which automatically downloaded all the latest drivers that I wanted (you have a choice what you want installed).

I also used Mobility Modder to get one of the latest ATi drivers.

Works like a charm!

I suggest reconsidering ThinkVantage System Update. Try it - if it doesn't work, you can uninstall it and everything that you install using it.

I did this way, installed the Ethernet driver only, then launched MS Update, it did reveal all the other missing drivers, except the wireless one, which I downloaded from IBM (the one dated 2007)...so far so good.

Mobility Modder: also the ATI Mobility Driver came with MS Update, now I wonder, what are the benefits in using Mobility Modder?
The only thing I'd like is to increase the screen resolution, but this is not possible due to the limitation of the screen, I guess :?:

Thanks

Newer driver, newer features, possibly removes certain bugs, and generally should offer faster performance.

What is your screen resolution set to? Generally, if the correct driver is installed and you can't increase the resolution any higher, that is the limitation of your LCD.

If it's XGA, your max resolution is 1024x768. You could upgrade the LCD screen to one with resolution of 1400x1050, or 1600x1200, but that's if you want to spend extra $$$.

Or get a docking station/port replicator for home, and buy an external 20+ inch LCD.
