Power-on password

#1 Post by Dow Jones » Wed Jan 26, 2005 10:23 pm

I heard from a friend that I must enter the poweron password correctly in 3 tries, or else....?

My question is, Or else what? What happens?

Is my friend just trying to scare me?

Or else... your machine will self-destruct.

Self destruct? Gimme a break...

What happens if I entered it wrong 3 times? Would I have to take it to IBM or something?

After 3 incorrect attempts it will "lock up" - you then turn the machine off and on again and you have 3 more attempts. Ad infinitum...

After 3 times, it locks up.

Oh alright thanks for that info. I do not understand the point of locking up though if you can just reboot and try again.

Lotus Notes has a similar, but even more elegant, feature. Every time you supply an incorrect login password there's a progressively longer delay before the dialog box reappears to give you another try. People who have difficulty with typing had better be patient ;)
