Want to know why?
Harddrive head moves from one part of the disk, to another, to another rapidly within milaseconds... Obviously you should hear something (I can hear my desktop harddrive do this during defragmentation, as well as with my T43)
The 5k80 clicking mentioned is not the normal seek. The abnormal clicking happens when the windows is idle. As soon as I do something that accesses the data from disk, the clicking stopped temporarily.

Ever heard a old 2MB Cache Maxtor click? You'll think it was the head slapping the disk thousands of times in a second!
Infact, its louder than my WD Raptor (I used to have Tornado fans, and I HEAR it click)

Yes, my harddisks also click while nothing is happening (Pagefile or something I guess?)

Well. Thats pretty weird then... "Makes noise when idle".

PS - Vantec Tornado - rated at 50dB? Sooo harddrive "not" idle = 50+ dB

Yeah if your system is still under warr. send it back. It's prob the read heads going bad. I work on everything from T22- T60's and they should not be that loud where its anoying. Call it in as an IBM HD fitness test 0x70 error. The problem is they deal with refurb drives and you may have the problem again down the line but as long as the system is under Warr than it all good ;)
