t41 new hdd-not recognising drive

#1 Post by jason9022 » Mon Mar 23, 2009 11:20 pm

first, sorry but i am very in depth with expanations sometimes, ill try to make this as short as possible. thanks. Have a new to me t41 that i used no problems for several months, during which "lappy" got a discusting virus that envaded the drivers, ate all of my programs and was able to get into the partition. got to the point of turning on to blue screen of death with some nonsence that im unable to recall exactly. bought ibm recovery discs from lenovo for the t41 series, loaded and worked eh , ok for around 2 days. if left on for more than 1 hour, it would go to "blue screen " and shut off. on 3rd day comp would not boot up, just would say "no operating system", so i tried to reload discs to no avail. something about antivirus issue when disc one would initate for the first 5seconds. that message lead me to believe , thru reading on this forum , that my factory hitachi deskstar 60g was smoked. ok, replaced the drive with a new in box 160 g, westrn digital scorpio blue 5400r's. loaded all discs, all seems good, then was promped to restart after disc 5 had been scribed onto this new hdd. when restarted , was given a message of no operating system found. tried to reload discs again, and was unable, suddenly its unable to find correct drive , message 88. have contacted wstrn digital, and they have told me that its a defective drive, which i did not believe. returned it to store, got another identical unit, new, installed and same exact problems. - note . im using this wd scorpio without jumper, as per wd told me to do. the factory hitachi does have a jumper on it- doesnt really matter though, im unable to get the t41 to recognise that drive as well. sooo.... pretty much in a real disaster here. any help would be awesome, thanks so much

Could try installing Linux, just to see if it works.

It sounds to me like you do not have the hard drive installed correctly and/or making full contact with the IDE connector inside of the drive bay.

yeah, cant install linux. dont have any discs or way to install anything if it wont even recognise the hdd. have tried numerous times removing and installing the hdd, and i do almost feel that it isnt seating properly? is there some special procedure that im missing for the install? it seems pretty straight forward, im a master automobile mechanic for mazdas, not ibms, but im not totally clueless, but who knows

Not a big fan of the whole Rescue & Recovery system but I seem to remember that your discs have only created the recovery partition on the HDD. You then have to push F11 when booting, get to the R & R pages and do a Factory install from there.

Search the Forum, there are guides on how to use the Recovery Discs.
