t43p with ati fireGL v3200 slower than t42p with fireGL t2?
t43p with ati fireGL v3200 slower than t42p with fireGL t2?
I've got a new (ebay) t43p with fireGL v3200 graphics, and an older t42p with fireGL T2. Both have the same memory (2GB), disk 100Gb 5200rpm. It seems to me that the graphics on the t43p are choppier/slower than the t42p when dragging windows around and such. Obviously, the resolutions are different (1400 vs 1600), but that doesn't seem to account for the difference, to my mind. Testing in Photoshop CS4 and dragging several layers around simultaneously the difference is really severe... With just three layers, the t43p is really laggy while dragging. I'm running driver ver. 8.383 (6.14.10) in the t43p and 8.133 (6.14.10) in the t42p.
Any ideas?

Power Management settings? Your T43p might be working in a power saving mode despite being plugged in. Check out the Catalyst power settings. Also check out Catalyst 3D settings, they might have been set all to max.

Thanks for the suggestions. Both machines are in "adaptive" CPU mode. I just checked the t43p, and the ATI power functions were set to "optimum performance". I tested it with the ATI power functions disabled entirely, and got the same performance. Putting the CPU into "maximum" mode improved the lagginess a bit, but redraws still looked really blocky - still less smooth than the t42p in "adaptive" mode.

Make sure both are using the same drivers. You could try using the Mobility Modder at http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool.php to install the latest ATI Catalyst. There should be no lag on both computers.

Updated the t43p to the latest ATI drivers via modtool. It's slightly more responsive (thanks). The t42p is still snappier, though...
