Sale tax - please help!

hello,

i think i will buy 2379R9U or 2379DXU (hope this is a good decision?) over the mastercard-ibm-website.

hope i understand everthink right - only think i need is a american creaditcard??? and adress???


but now my question the price is 1934 $. but i have to pay sale tax on it - right??? but i come from germany so if i leave USA can i get the sale tax back at the airport or somewhere???

If your item is shipped to a state in which IBM has an office, then you will likely have to pay the sales tax for that state. If you have it shipped to Germany, you can probably avoid tax, however, it is highly likely you will have to pay an import duty.

because ibm will ship only to USA. so they will charge sales tax. (how much is that for chigago?)
but what happend if i went to the airport and want this money back??? is this possiple?

Well it depends on which state your having it shipped to. Every state has it's own sales tax rate and some states do not charge sales tax. Sales tax can also vary from county to county within a state. Some states that do not charge sales tax are Delaware, New Hampshire and a couple of others which I forget.

but my question is still: if i (or someone) is take the laptop from chigago to the airport (tax office) can i get the sales tax back when i fligh back to germany???

I understand your question, when I visited London I got a refund form for the VAT I paid on a large purchase. I turned in the form to US customs when I returned to the US and eventually received a refund for the VAT. I do not know if the same applies to US sales tax when you return to Germany.

By the way, I think the total sales tax in the City of Chicago will be 9% this year, of course that's state plus local taxes. I don't know how much is charged by IBM when you ship to a city address, they may only charge the state tax.

Doing some on-line research, Louisianna claims to be the only state that offers sales tax refunds to foreign tourists. It applies when you buy from a number of retail stores, which you collect at the New Orleans airport as you leave the state. So, the only other suggestion I'd make to avoid sales tax is to send it to someone in Delaware, which has no sales tax.

Yeah, I'm surprised at this myself:
There is no national tax system in the United States such as V.A.T. Instead, sales taxes are assessed individually by state and city, and each state has complete autonomy in administering its taxes. Thus, to request a refund of state sales tax, you must apply to the individual state where the purchases were made. We have been advised that Louisiana is the only state which provides a refund for sales tax for international visitors for goods purchased at participating stores, and in several other states no sales tax is charged if the visitor does not take direct possession of items purchased but has them shipped directly out of the state.

Chicago sales tax is 9%, but probably IBM will charge only Illinois sales tax
of 6.25%.

Sorry, you cannot get the sales tax refunded.
