2 questions: problem with t41p wireless and recovery CD's

#1 Post by liquid cooled » Thu Apr 02, 2009 9:14 am

Hopefully this forum can provide me with the answers I need. I did a quick search but couldnt find what I needed.

I recently purchased a t41p off of ebay for a good price (Had a t21 that was converted by me to a t23 2648 and alas is no more ). Anyways laptop works great sans one thing. The wireless is not working properly it works sort of. It is the intel 2100 3B (only card). When I tried to connect to my linksys wireless router that was running in a mixed b/g mode it would not connect. When I switched it to B only the wireless began to work and is stable. Last night I took the t41 into work with me and tried to connect to various insecure wireless networks and it was hit or miss at best with it on known non secure networks (coffehouses) and other businesses. Im guessing its the same mixed issue im having with the linksys one at home. Keep having problems where it says waiting associating when on the linksys and it says waiting to associate

I purchased a Intel 2200 b/g (supposed to be an IBM specific so hopefully no boot errors) card that should be here shortly but I would like to get the 2100 card working. Wondering if anyone has any idea as to why this is happening or how to fix it. Drivers and access connections have been updated to latest versions.

Next question I have is since the laptop is off of ebay I didnt get a recovery cd set with it. It has the windows xp key on the laptop base. All I need to purchase is the t41 set of Cd's and I should be good to go on reinstalling a fresh boot of windows (it was refreshed before being sent out to me)?

Thanks in advance guys,
Mike

I don't know for the wireless card problem, but for the recovery CD's, yes, you just need to get the recovery CD's.
Then follow the instruction of the Forum

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=52133

I ordered the set from Lenovo, but maybe you could post a "want to buy" on the marketplace and save some money.
Don't forget to check the specific code for the CD set for your model/machine.

Couple of questions:

1. Are you using IBM Access Connections - many people have solved their wireless problems by deleting it and using Windows wireless manager.
2. Are you using the latest Intel 2100B driver off the Lenovo site?
3. Are you using SP3? many people have had wireless problems after updating to SP3.
4. Are you using any Wireless G notebooks or other equipment on your network (is your network encrypted)?

Yes, using AC. I may try doing this.
2. Are you using the latest Intel 2100B driver off the Lenovo site?
Yes
3. Are you using SP3? many people have had wireless problems after updating to SP3.
Had problem with both SP2 and SP3

4. Are you using any Wireless G notebooks or other equipment on your network (is your network encrypted)?[/quote]
Only G is probably my brothers mac :(. Router is a linksys B/G combo. Yes its encrypted with 128 wep key. It works fine if I have it on B only but if it goes to Mixed B+G its a no go, it can see it and try to connect but just stops at waiting to associate.

Dump the old 802.11b card in your situation, and get it going with the 2200 b/g card.
If 1802 error, get the fix for it and you are done.
Look in the Marketplace forum for your restore CDs or put up a Want-To-Buy (WTB) for them.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions got the problem solved when I switched to the 2200 B/G card today. Now im trying to get it to work with access connections.
Which is not working also the wireless light is not illuminating anymore, going to do a search of this site to see if I can find a fix. I tried the method found here with negative results http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... onnections. Also forgot to add that it is not an actual IBM card its a generic intel card and I did the no1802.com bios flash. Am I going to need to get an actual IBM card to use AC and get the wireless light back on? I saw something about flashing the wireless card to make it look like an IBM card.

On another note what memory specs to I need I have 2 512 sticks now and want to upgrade to 2x 1 gig sticks,

Also picked up the recovery cd's from the marketplace the other day.
Thanks Mike

Depending on your Front Side Bus SPEED, you need 2x1GB 200-pin SODIMMs of PC2100 (400MHz fsb) or PC2700 (533MHz FSB).
The PC2700 will also work on the 400MHz FSb, but not the other way around.
If you have a CPU 715/725/735/745, you have a 400MHz FSB.
If you have a CPU 710/720/730/740/750 you have a 533MHz FSB.

Went ahead and ordered a for sure IBM card, well see how this one goes. If i did the 1802 hack, is it going to matter if its still active, im thinking not but just want to make sure. $15 to hopefully fix the problem.

Depending on the card, sometimes the wireless light won't light (I haven't had this problem with Thinkpads but I've had it with Toshibas). Also, does Fn-F5 work? Sometimes, you need the latest power function driver, OSD driver and wireless driver to get all of the wireless functions to work correctly.
