external Dell monitor with T42

I recently had to swap T42's and with the current machine I noticed a few strange changes.

For example, I used to connect to a Dell 2001FP at 1600x1400 res and get extremely sharp image (as expected) without any trouble whatsoever. With the new machine the image on the Dell is quite blurry, in fact worse that generated at the lower 1280 res by a T22. i tried lots of changes in the settings (colour depth, refresh rate, etc.), but nothing seems to help.

the only thing I recall that could be relevant is that in the early stages of using the Dell2001 with the first T42 the monitor would display a message 'auto-adjust in progress' and the image would improve. any ideas anybody? some help would be greatly appreciated!

solved it - just had to manually force 'autoadjust' using the monitor menu. in the past this was occuring automatically whenever a new machine was hooked up to the monitor.
