t42 display turns off

#1 Post by bostonblackie » Mon Apr 06, 2009 6:44 am

I have a t42 that has developed this nasty habit. the display goes off about every minute or so. I have checked all the setting and could not make a change that would stop from occurring. As a work around I close the lid and raise it again and try to get done before it happens again. Any thoughts?

Is the LCD bright and free of pink tint? If so, try replacing the backlight inverter. Otherwise could be the CCF is going out.

thanks for the quick reply. Just what is a backlight inverter? I gather it is an internal part. On a scale of 1 to 10, how easy is it to replace it myself

thanks

It is very easy to remove for a 15 inch LCD, just behind the LCD bezel with two screws on the lower front behind the black dots.

14 inch is a bit harder, two screws in the front, 6 inch sides and two at top. The inverter is mounted in the lower right.

I finally got around to replacing the inverter and powered up the machine but got the same results. I quick flash of the boot up image with pink tones, follow by a dark screen and you can just barely see something on the screen. Any thought about what my next steps would be?

The pink makes it sound like the bulb. I personally think they are a pain to replace and I have quit doing it. There is a guy on the forum who replaces them, but reviews are mixed. In any case, with T4x machines, it is easier and cheaper to slap on a replacement screen, and the used ones are not too expensive. The last couple I sold went for about $45, cheaper if they are not perfect. (prices assume you have a 14" screen without bluetooth. 15" or bluetooth antennas are harder to find.) I probably have some more around. If you are interested, send me a PM.

I think I have the same problem. I have a very slight pink tint at start-up.
If I turn the back light all the way up, my light dies. I can restart by tapping the screen closed switch. So far, it stays lit if I turn the display down a notch.

Does Lenovo do this type of repair? If so any idea of cost.

I am not a do it your self type.

Suggestions. (I'd like to buy a new unit, but it's tough to shell out the $$$$ right now!)

I would have to agree that doing it yourself is fought with danger. I a sort of DIY and I had an old screen to practice on. By the time I was done, I had broken the light and decide that it would be a whole lot easier to go get a used one someplace. Just my opinion.

The repair was $115.00

I shipped it 2 day Fedex charged to my account. I did not get the bill yet, but that was probably about $50 each way. If you go UPS ground they charge you return freight, and it's less money.
