New Thinkpad

#1 Post by ThinkPad » Sat Jan 29, 2005 5:15 pm

Picked up a T-41 at a great price. Its awesome, though I think the keyboard is a little flimsy compared to my T-30, but its alot thinner and much longer battery life so thats a plus. The wireless function is great.

My First question is can I take one 512 ram card from my T30 and install it in my T41? I opened the back and there is room for only one card, whereas my T30 has two. Is there a card installed somewhere else in the computer?

Here are some pics

How do I tell which one is built in? Is it the 512 or a 256? I have 768 total. and want to swap out the lower with a 512 card.

Take out one of them and see how much you have left.

I just took the card under the computer out and there is 512 RAM currently, so this one is 256. Im going to swap the 512 from my T30 and see what happens.

Yes, but your T41 is almost two times faster than your T30.

You understand that, right?

1600 Mhz is 1.6 Ghz. So you have a T30 with 2 Ghz and T41 with 1.6 Ghz. And yes T41 is faster because T41 must be using a Intel Mobile processor which has a one of the best architecture for mobile computing. You can't compare a normal Pentium Processor and a Pentium M processor only by the clock speed and come to any conclusion which is better.

In my weblog I had few links about Pentium Centrino processors. Check it out.

Here are some benchmarks I did. Hope this might help you to clarify your doubt.

My T-30 is also Pentium M 2.0GHz...not just any 'ole pentium. So, I agree with ThinkPad....the T30 will be faster. One reason, that for the money, I got a T30. However the 1GB of RAM will make the 1.6Ghz seem faster if you're multi-tasking. Am I right or am I wrong?

Interesting weblog info.
My T-30 is also a pentium M. I guess the Centrino is a little slower than then regular M

I understand your confusion about Intel's processor speeds, but you can't compare the PentiumM 1.6GHz in your T41 with the 2GHz Pentium 4M in your T30, they're completely different processors. You're comparing apples and oranges, not apples and apples.

Have a look at this: http://www.intel.com/performance/mobile ... rience.htm and it will help to explain things a little.

There's no such thing as a PentiumM T30. It's a Pentium 4M, which is a completely different processor.

The first PentiumM Thinkpad was the T40.

T30 might be having a Pentium M which is a modified version of Pentium 4 processor to suit the mobile market, but I am 100 % sure its not a Centrino processor. Pentium M 2 Ghz was released by Intel somewhere in 2002

http://www.intel.com/pressroom/archive/ ... 24comp.htm

Centrino 2.0 GHz came only in end of 2004. Clock Cycle doesn't mean much anymore. And by comparing the clock cycle of two processors you will not be able to tell which is faster. Specially because the new Centrino's (Dothan) comes with 2 MB L2 cache.

Kudos to intel for spreading this "more MHz is faster" business

I think first one to break that perception was AMD, and now intel themselves are breaking it with Centrino and Itanium. There is much more to a processor performance than clock speed.

All "Centrinos" are PentiumMs, but all PentiumMs are not Centrinos!

Centrino is a marketing term invented by Intel that denotes a PentiumM based machines that contains the processor, an Intel chipset and an Intel WiFi mini-PCI card. My T40 is NOT a Centrino solely because I use the IBM (Atheros) WiFi card and not the Intel card, that's the only difference between my machine and a Centrino machine.

The 2.0GHz mobile CPU introduced by Intel in 2002 was a Pentium 4M, not a PentiumM.

The PentiumM processor is actually based on the PIII processor.

The Penitum 4M processor in the T30 and other Thinkpads is a modified Pentium 4.

My T41 1.8 GHz Dothan Pentium M is much (and I mean very much) faster than my T30 2.0 GHz Pentium 4 Mobile was. Both machines have (had) 7200 rpm hard drives; both have (had) 768Mb of ram. ... JD Hurst
