New T42 CTO. Have some questions about operation :)

Hello,

I recently sold my 4 months old X40 (I needed more computing power . tough it was a perfect laptop. The best ever I dare to say)

And now I bought a T42.

Not the machine I was aiming for, but the price / performance ratio was 100 times more interesting then on the T41P or T42P (which is funny, because I ordered a T41P, and when wanted to take it home, I had a few dead pixels, so unfortunately that did not happen , and if it would have had a pixel perfect screen I would never bought this one)

But oke, that’s just bad luck.

I have 3 questions. Because this is the first T42 I work on.

The specs are:

1.7Ghz Dothan 2mb cache
512mb pc 2700
256mb pc 2700
(total 786mb)
5k60 drive (I was hoping on a 7k60 but that wasn’t included in my model, tough some other guys did get a 7k60… but they where lucky because they did not pay for it either )
15” Flexview screen @ 1400x1050
A/B/G Wlan


So, here are my questions:

1:

I only used the battery like 15 minutes in the shop. And now have it fully charged. Ever at a higer capacity then it was designed for. How should I handle it? I heard I have to do like 2 times a bring the battery back to good health? (working it down to 1% and then recharge) And then the result should be a battery that longer holds its capacity?
Or do I have it wrong? Please tell me so, because its now @ 100% and I don’t want so spoil even 0.1% capacity (that’s because those flexviews love juice )

2:

The screen, it’s a super bright screen, whit a nice viewing angle, but even the screen on my X40 (1024x786) and on my Travelmate 800CLi (later threw that **** away but that was also running on 1400x1050) ghosts like 2 times les then this screen.

It’s really unbelievable. I normally work with 2 xerox XL 775D screens, that have 16ms so I am used to a good response time, but this screens is like 40ms or something? I can play games, but I really can notice the ghosting.

3: the machine is absolutely silent, on the fact that I can hear the 5400rpm drive spinning. Its sounds like a silent cpu fan. But its not even near the silent level my X40 was, or my TM800CLi. I know that hdd’s make some noise normally, but is this normal? (its not very loud, and you only can hear it in a silent room, in the shop I did not hear it, and there was no one else in the shop. So that says a little about the sound levels where talking about. But I was wondering because I heard those drives where meant to be so silent

Oh, and one other thing.

The cd drive, somethimes it doesnt want's to open. Only if i reboot i can open it. So this has to be a software problem right?

If you don’t know the rest, the most important thing for me is the battery right now, because I want to use it tomorrow @ my school. So it needs to be in good condition

So, what should I do? It only has 1 cycle, and I think its best to drain it completely 2 times. via the restore battery health option

Or not?


(btw, I notice a very small color difference on my flexview , the left is more blue, and the right is more yellow )

It's not really necessary to "exercise" a new Li-ION battery. Just charge it fully (overnight for the first time) and have fun using your new Thinkpad.

Well... I don't think there is any problem on your battery. Usually it's "over charges" for the first few times. But in order to keep your battery in good conditions, please exhaust your battery every time you use it. I mean, when you start using battery, then use it until the last minute.

About the LCD, well... thinkpad is aimed to the business, therefore you can't expect a multimedia oriented LCD on it. At least you can't expect a 16ms response time for the LCD. But if you do see ghost images a lot even when you are doing usual stuffs, return your thinkpad to IBM since it's not normal.

About the noise, I don't know how loud X40 is, but to me, T42 is silent. I think the reason why you think X40 is quiter is that IBM use a ultra low voltage (or low voltage) Pentium M on it, and hence the power consumption is much less than the CPU in T42. In addition, the VGA chip in T42 is usually much powerful than the one in X40, and so is the power consumption. Therefore, you can expect T42 is even more silient than X40...

Well, a lot isn’t the right word for it. But when I am dragging pictures you certainly see some ghosting, and when scrolling you also see it. (as in: when i scroll down this page at a normal speed. I cant read the letters, but 0.2 secconds after I stop scrolling the image is normal. So i only really notice it when I am gaming.)

But I don’t really know if this is so extreme that I should return it.

Concerning the noise, the cpu fan never goes on, I really mean the harddisk
And that thing sounds like a silent cpu fan

But thanks for you advice, I am now working my battery to the last drop
(It’s in the restore health modus right now)

Li-Ion batteries do not like being deep discharged and doing so will harm the battery and you will loose capcity.

I have a T42 which I recieved the same day you got yours. It also has the slight noise problem. I can live with this.

Until today I had a perfect screen. Lit pixel right in the middle of the screen. I can also live with this as it was perfect when I got it. However if the pixel failure rate continues at this rate ie. one lit pixel every two or three days, well, then it will be a replacement job.

Also have the same problem with the DVD/CD drive. Not sure I can live with this.

Does anyone at this forum have any tips or ideas about how one would resolve this?

This is False information.

I know lots of people mentioned this before, but then why IBM wrote a program to optimize the capacity of the battery? If you really notice how the program goes, then you will see what I mean. The program tried to do exactly what I said to gain some capacity back.

I am not saying that you are wrong. In fact, I think it's correct, but I still think it's good to maintain the battery in that way.

I don't really know if it's normal. When I scroll down this page on my T42, I can't read letters either. However, I don't think that's because there are some problems on LCD...

I think 7K60 on my T42 is quite ok... I did notice the noise from the HDD sometimes, but it's not always there. You can not blame on HDD when you are launching programs, right? It has to work!

On the LCD:

I know ghosting is normal, but I owned over 10 laptops, and except the p1 133mhz 12" laptop I had like 5 years back, no screen ever ghosted this much. Having said that, in Windows it’s perfectly workable. And when I game I don’t make less frags, I only need to look better (because of the blurry image ... but once again, its well know that flexviews ghost allot I thought?)

Interesting note on the p1 133 laptop: that screen ghosted so much I even could see the letters ghost in ms word

On the hdd:

I have the 5k60 and the _only_ noise it makes is the spinning noise that sounds in a silent room like my bedroom as if there is a silent cpu fan running.
I also had a R50P and that one did have a 7k60. That one was more silent at normal operation, but like you said, I could hear that one working. My 5k60 is absolute silent in diskoperation

BTW: I deep discharged my battery and I now have 1 Wh less. But I know this is normal, since this is the first time I worked on the battery
