Are new ThinkPads "Longhorn" Compatible?
Are new ThinkPads "Longhorn" Compatible?
I believe Microsoft's next version of Windows (Longhorn) will be in Beta soon and in order to take advantage of it's new graphical features, I believe only certain types of current graphic desktop cards meet the requirements. Does anyone know if the new T43Ps will be able to take advantage of the new "Avalon" interface of Longhorn? I know many of us hope are new ThinkPads will be able to fully run Longhorn without any graphical limitations.
Thanks,
Thanks,
Re: Are new ThinkPads "Longhorn" Compatible?
All T4x series feature at least 32MB of V-RAM which will be enough for Longhorn. However, to run Longhorn as intended you will want >64MB of V-RAM so in answer to your question, yes, any T4xp laptop will run Longhorn perfectly well but remember, only an idiot will install Longhorn right away. You'll want to wait a few months for the problems to be ironed out before you install it on your main machine.
Longhorn won't be here 'til late 2006 so we've a while to go yet and Beta versions should be installed on a secondary PC, not your main unit.

Hallo,
I have a T42p (2373HTG) with Italian preload featuring Windows XP SP2. Suppose for a while I would like to switch to Longhorn (maybe in 2194 A.C.) but I a have a question:
where can I take a new preload with that system?
should I install a clean version? in this case: where will I find the drivers?
I think that my T42p is almost perfect with THE software buyed with it. Am I wrong? Is it possible to upgrade the software? I mean: to only from tpdrivers.com (where I am always confused) but a FULL new install.
Sorry for that.

I actually did some more research and it appears there are a few more hard requirments especially for the advanced "Aero" Interface. It says things like:
Minumum 64MB RAM (128 recommended)
DX9 hardware decoding
2.0 Pixel Shading ability
You can see more at the following links:
http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1 ... 261,00.asp
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/di ... -reqs.mspx
With these increased demands, does anyone know if the T43p can still do the job.
Thanks again,

So does this mean that any Model thinkpad with a 7500 graphics card in it is going to be introuble.any thinkpad with a 9600 or high will be able to run it at full spec, keep in mind, things can always change tho
Does getting the Intel Extreme Integrated Graphics, future proof you more since its newer than the the 7500, even though it integrated.?

AFAIK there is the Aero and Aero Glass functions, I think Aero will go on the Radeon 7500, Aero Glass will work on the Extreme Graphics, since it has DX9 Functions, but that will take much of CPU Speed, so you could forget either on Extreme Graphics. Futher the recommendations of Microsoft tells, that Aero will work on 32 Meg GPU and Aero glass needs at least 64 Megs.
