T42 powered on but no display

#1 Post by gforce » Thu May 14, 2009 12:02 pm

Hi guys, 'tis been a long time since I last posted on here.

Anyhow, I was surfing the web on my trusty T42 last night when the display suddenly started flickering big time and the computer just hung. Moving the trackpoint didn't move the mouse and the keyboard wasn't responding to any input. So I pressed the power button for about 5 seconds for a forced power off shutdown.

Now upon powering it up, the power and battery indicators light up but the display is absolutely blank! The heatsink fan is still running and the CD tray can be ejected but there is no BIOS splash screen.. just nothing.

I tried removing the HDD and putting it back in but that didn't help.

I also tried hooking up the T42 to an external monitor to see if I could get a video signal but it's just zilch right now.

It does seem that my laptop has caught the dreaded T4x-gpu bug but it doesn't boot up even if I apply some pressure on and around the spacebar that's just above the video chip.

Could anyone please help me out here? Losing this laptop would be a major blow.
Thanks.

Yes, it does indeed display all the hallmarks of the GPU failure. However, you may only need to be without it for a week or so. Search this site for companies that re-flow the GPU/motherboard. The prices appear to be around $70 - $150 but most require you to disassemble the motherboard from the base (or they charge you extra to do this).
