[T42] 1802 Error now Resource Conflict

#1 Post by Paul Pennington » Mon May 18, 2009 5:19 pm

This T42 2373-JTU I recently purchased here on the Marketplace is giving me fits with the wireless card. Some previous owner changed the card, and during the initial software installation from the IBM recovery disks it could not find the network controller software. I upgraded the BIOS to the latest version, and it then showed the infamous 1802 error:

"ERROR 1802: Unauthorized network card is plugged in - Power off and remove the miniPCI network card."

I ordered an Atheros 39T0081 card from eBay and installed it, but still got the same error. I tried the no-1802 hack by Tisheng Chen, and the 1802 error did indeed go away, but now I get:

"ERROR Resource Conflict - PCI Network Controller in slot 01 Bus: 02, Device: 02, Function 00"

I tried un-installing the driver and re-installing (latest version 4.1.2.156), but no change.

Booting from a CD and running PC-Doctor for DOS shows:

Foxconn a/b/g Scan PCI Device PASSED
Foxconn a/b/g Read MAC Address PASSED

Hardware info shows Interrupt 13 in use by this card. It's interrupt 11 on another working T42 with an identical FRU wireless card. The machine with the error seems to be stuck on interrupt 13.

Device manager, under Network Adapters, shows a yellow bang for 11a/b/g Wireless LAN MiniPCI Adapter II. Deleting it and re-scanning gives a message that an error occurred during installation and the yellow bang remains.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to get this working?

Try this one:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-70480

Run the Setup file then check in the System/Hardware/Device for driver version. If it is not right, manual update the driver.

Thanks for helping. OK... you want me to try reverting to an older driver. The installation ran without error but when I checked in Device Manager, it still had the newest driver. I ran the manual update, but when I get to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\WLLANATH there are four .inf files. The folder IMDrv seems to refer to something else, so I eliminated that, but I was still left with these two:

C:\DRIVERS\WIN\WLLANATH\WINXP_2K\NET5211.INF (Atheros AR5001)
C:\DRIVERS\WIN\WLLANATH\WINXP_2K\netathw.inf (Atheros AR5008)

I have not been able to find any cross-reference that shows an Atheros chipset number for my FRU 39T0081 card. It's label does say "Atheros AR5BMB-44". Can anyone help me out with this information?

Edit: I tried the 2nd .inf file above, netathw.inf, but there was no change. Still get the "resource conflict" error. Device manager does show the 7.4.2.134 driver installed however.

I still have not been able to get a wireless card working in this T42. I removed the above 39T0081 card and installed a 91P7301 from eBay. I finally got the correct driver installed (Version 4.1.2.156, file 77WC39WW), but the "Resource Conflict" error persists. I don't believe it's a driver problem anyway, as the error is coming from the BIOS at startup, before Windows even starts to load drivers.

Does anyone have any other ideas as to what may be causing this problem?

Ask seller what card s/he used with what drivers. Maybe s/he will sell you the old card?

Just read somewhere there may be a tiny wifi on/off switch at the back of your laptop!

Well, I have the card right here: It's an Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG. I bought it from mpcook, but the card was changed out by a previous owner. This model originally came with an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG. But, I'd really like to get it working with an Atheros card, as I prefer them, and also so it would match my other T42.

As to any tiny switches, I don't think so.

Well, the wireless is finally working on this T42 with the 91P7301 Atheros card. I emailed back and forth with the seller on eBay (DragonOnTheEdge) several times Friday. Gena there thought it was a bad card, and sent out another Saturday morning. It arrived here in Georgia Tuesday from Washington state -- excellent service from them and USPS. I installed it and no more 1802 error or resource conflict either! The driver situation on these wireless miniPCI cards is a real mess. IBM/Lenovo should be ashamed. A pox on both their houses.

This error turned out to be a hardware problem: a bad connection around the mini-PCI card socket. Pressing on the motherboard causes the problem to come and go. The computer is rarely used on wi-fi anyway, so I just disabled it in BIOS.
